4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Showcase for the Classic Goodman Quartet
Collectables is to be commended for the fine job the label is doing. As one of a handfull of collector-friendly labels, Collectables seeks out and leases classic recordings which the owner-labels are alowing to gather dust in the vault. Collectables is to be commended for the fine job the label is doing. As one of a handfull of collector-friendly labels, Collectables seeks out and leases classic recordings which the owner-labels are alowing to gather dust in the vault. Then, reissues the material on CD, often two complete LPs on a single disc, as is the case here. This CD aptly combines the "Trio-Quartet-Quintet" LP of classic sides from 1935-39, and a 1963 reunion set, ("Together Again"). This is the classic small group of Benny Goodman, Teddy Wilson, Gene Krupa and Lionel Hampton, which showed the music world that swing was not just a big band thing.
It swings from start to finish, the later stereo tracks noticeably crisper, but an impressive remastering nonetheless of the earlier renderings. Although this set is not for the true Goodman-phile, as all of the "Trio-Quartet-Quintet" titles are included in the "Complete Goodman Victor Small Groups" box set, and due to space limitations, "Who Cares" was omitted from the reunion set, it is a deserving addition for the casual collector, or anyone who wants to know what swing is all about. ("Together Again" is available unabridged on its own disc from RCA.)Together Again! (1963 Reunion with Lionel Hampton, Teddy Wilson & Gene Krupa)
