Editorial Reviews

Review

...Adventurous improvisational explorations that deconstruct and reassemble...reverential yet energetic reviews of numerous... standards...Beck proves to be a ballad interpreter who allows the original melody to whisper through his own vision. -- All About Jazz, June 17, 2007

...Beck's legacy includes stints with Miles Davis, David Sanborn and Buddy Rich...commands respect via his formidable technical acumen and broad comprehension of the jazz vernacular...crack rhythm section...fluid jazz progressions and funk-tinged voicings ... the artists delve into rock-solid grooves and an up-tempo swing vamp during the standard, "You and the Night and the Music," as Beck renders some heat via his articulate phrasings and speedy single note flurries. -- ejazznews, April 17, 2007

...a master of rich chordal voicings, intricate contrapuntal playing and melodic improvisation...a great guitarist, and an open-minded one at that. -- JazzTimes, August 2007

...pleasant, soft-toned, with a little Brazilian seasoning but no nylon. I find myself focusing on the bassist, who's worth the attention...B+ -- www.tomhull.com/blog Monday, April 9. 2007

...splendid new album...a guitar player of tremendous mastery and experience, of freshness and innovation...an incredible resume ... an incredible album. -- top40-charts.com, May 11, 2007

From the Artist

"This rhythm section is almost too good to be true. Personality, groove, ears, and musicianship - all the ingredients for a serious jam." - Joe Beck

I just re-discovered this disc after letting it set far too long. I remember my first impression was not so favorable. After all this time and a fresh hearing I'm revising that opinion. Joe Beck has always had a very clean, hard edge to his tone that sometimes leaves me a bit cold. But that's just a personal taste and there has never been any question about his comand of his art.

I suppose the review supplied by Amazon is a fair summary. Just scan it for adjectives. "Energy" may sum it up best. If you're going to do a guitar trio of standards you better bring something new to the table. "Laura"!? when was the last time you heard that? Whenever it was, chances are it wasn't like this! What Beck brings is the energy of a fusion player channeled through years of experience and intuition and flawless technique.

But the icing on the cake is the rhythm section. Debriano and Arpino are not, bless them, Chambers and Cobb. They are not stepping in here to do the "golden era" vibe. They are tight and fast and they can take Beck anyplace he wants to go. And it works both ways. I had to play Alone Together (which has never been a favorite of mine) a second time just to hear how Beck comps behind these guys.

Having said the CD kicks (at least that's the overall impression you may be left with) there is a equal balance of ballads here and for these Beck stays close to the heart of the song, more straight ahead with the sensitivity the songs require without looking back.

If you're familiar with and like Beck's style this should probably be in your collection, if you're not familiar with Joe Beck, this might be a good place to start. And by the way, while you're at it you better check out Jimmy Bruno and Joe Beck together on Polarity. Especially if you play or even dream of playing jazz guitar.

We lost Joe in 2008. This was one of his last recordings. If it leaves us wanting more, perhaps that is the best tribute to the artist.

I haven't heard Joe Beck in years, and found this CD, which gave me some superb harmonies and some funky solos. I would just say, but ir download (if available) this album. Joe's guitar is as good as it gets. If you like Tal Farlow, Jimmy Raney and Joe Pass, just buy it. It makes an enjoyable asset for your Ipod or wathever you use to play music. Thanks for your music Joe!

I'd recommend this CD, heard a track on the radio and decided to give the CD a go. A really cool disc, great for quiet listening.

A great studio and jazz guitarist, Joe is playing really well and very exposed here in a trio setting, darling.

Is this the same Joe Beck from long ago? Why to keep up with the times. Good stuff.
