Key Features:

  • Vehicles - Terrestrial Motorworks has fused human and Votan technology into the Hannibal 800TR Quad. This four-wheel-drive, all-terrain powerhouse combines a hybrid engine that runs off petrohol and raw gulanite with a reinforced vysidium alloy frame to handle heavy loads and massive hits. There is no smoother ride across the new frontier than the rough-and-ready Hannibal 800TR.
  • Enemies - Hellbugs are a nightmarish by-product of Votan terramorphing technology. These insectoid killing machines bore up from hives deep underground to gather food for their Matriarch, overwhelming their victims in a barrage of chittering teeth and blood-red carapace. As awful as they are, Hellbug waste can be processed into petrohol, the only renewable fuel source on the frontier.
  • Locales - The Arkfall has infused idyllic Marin County with gulanite, an otherworldly mineral that powers Votan technology. Now, driven by lust for the precious crystals, cyborg “Miner 99ers” have turned the bustling mining territory of Marin into a war-torn hell. Even the boldest Ark Hunters must overcome the dread that haunts this area as they confront its vicious denizens.
  • Activities - The Votans came to Earth in titanic vessels called Arks. But an unexplained series of explosions broke the ships apart, surrounding the planet in a belt of orbiting debris. Now, without warning, chunks of the wreckage crash down to earth in cataclysmic “Arkfall events.”
Arkfalls are dynamic, scaling, multi-stage challenges drawing Ark Hunters, thugs, and hungry Hellbugs into frenzied battles for rare resources and alien technology. Those who brave an Arkfall might reap vast riches … or perish in a storm of gunfire and screeching monsters.

3.0 out of 5 stars Flawed, Fun and Not for Everyone April 8, 2013
Platform for Display:PC Download| Edition:Standard|Verified Purchase
Defiance is the new online game by Trion Worlds, the creators of the popular MMORPG Rift, and tie-in for the upcoming SyFy series of the same name.

I say "online game" because that is probably the best way to describe it. The moniker "MMO" ("massively multiplayer online") also technically applies, but because the phrase "MMO" generally implies to many people a host of features that are common in "MMORPGs" ("massively multiplayer online roleplaying games"), and Defiance does not have these, the terminology rankles somewhat here. What this means, generally, is that the less one is expecting Defiance to act and feel like what one generally thinks of when on hears the word "MMO", the better one's experience in the game will likely be.

Defiance is, at its heart, a third person shooter. It is an online third person shooter, which encourages both informal co-op play (i.e., stumbling upon other players while running missions and helping each other informally) and features set co-op play maps, and competitive (player vs. player) maps as options as well. The actual gameplay is very much like a shooter in that the greatest impact on how the player's character acts in the game are the "twitch skills" of the player -- aiming, moving, reflexes, strategy, reaction time, situational awareness and so on. This is different from the typical "MMO" (most of which are MMORPGs), because this is not an RPG, and therefore the lion's share of what happens is based on the player's skill and not the attributes of the in-game character.

Defiance does have some nods to RPGs and some things that could be considered "RPG elements".

4.0 out of 5 stars The MMO that pulled be back in April 3, 2013

I had just about given up on MMOs for good. I am a former WoW player (from original until Cataclysm) and simply got burned out. I got tired of the grinding/farming and also the $15 subscription fee. I tried Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2, and they are okay but too much like WoW and unless you have lots of friends to raid or do dungeon runs with it just isn't much fun and feels like a grind. I play occasionally. I even tried The Secret World and although the puzzles are fun, the click for action skill for your character just makes it look like a gimped version of WoW. I was hoping TSW would be more like Defiance as far as combat (I hope Defiance copies some puzzle ideas and story elements from TSW) and that's where Defiance delivers, with it's fast paced third-person shooter action.

Defiance is a Buy to play Shooter MMO, which you can play with friends, but also which you can play solo with just random players joining in to complete quests. I have been playing the game since launch and have had lots of fun in all the different gameplay options (from driving challenges to blitz kill stuff challenges). You don't really need to group to help each other out on quests (so far) and grouping will only happen automatically on co-op maps. I have enjoyed the co-op instances which are very much like dungeons only there is no tank or healer!(awesome) I have noticed that for the PC version there is no problems with lag even when 30-40 payers get together to kill huge enemies. The servers were down minimally on launch day and the servers have been on each time I have played during peak hours since then without a hitch.

I haven't tried PvP yet, but look forward to that.

Defiance was really disappointing for me. Coming from Trion, I expected a lot more out of this title. My guess is that with the show launch date they really had no choice but to launch the game now when it still needed a good bit more time in the oven. Overall I can sum up Defiance in a few words - bland, generic, uninspired and repetitive. The combat, at it's core, is really fun and I think they nailed it there. However, almost everything else suffers. playing on the pc, it feels like a god awful port of a console game with the most frustrating UI I've played since Final Fantasy XI. Then there is the chat, or should I say, non existent chat. I've never played a game that I felt so alone in while being surrounded by a bunch of other players at the same time. Pretty much nobody uses chat since it's so user unfriendly so what you get is absolute silence for 90% of your game time.

And for a game that's supposed to tie into a tv show you would think that story would be a huge aspect of the experience. What a disappointment that was! You can EASILY make your way through the main missions in this game in a day or two (and the story is super boring and uneventful) - then you're left with what comprises about 75-80% of all the quests in the game, that being the side missions. And the side missions are awful......AWFUL!!!! The most mundane, uninteresting, repetitive and generic quests that are even put to shame by early 2000's questing in mmo's. While MOST mmo's are trying to improve and make questing better, this game says oh no no NOOOOOO you don't! Seriously, they are that bad, and unfortunately that's the majority of your quests in this game.

There are a few positives, the combat as I said was fun and the time trials and mini shooting games are fun diversions.
