A better Monopoly than Monopoly,

If you ever wished that Monopoly was "fixed" this is it. They added two new levels (Which you can chose to use or not.) Different things to build, gas stations, malls, and sky scrapers. It adds the typical home rule of getting some cash for free parking. Plus the cards travel and stock market are nice and add just the right amount of randomness to the game. (You can order extra cards with more things direct from the manufacturer.) The kids and I like this game. I'd say its a bit harder than Monopoly and game play takes a bit longer but it has the same elements without just renaming everything to a street in your town. (Like the NameYourself..Monopoly versions floating around.) Education value: Unless you're raising a Donald Trump Jr., who really wants to encourage monopoly building? Math skills and money handling are taught.

It's Better Than Monopoly,

I was dating a girl back in 1999 when she suggested we each spend $20 to get this "new game" called Triopoly. Being a huge fan of Monopoly, and even more excited that a female would suggest such a grand idea out of thin air, I went with her to a game shoppe she already knew about in a local mall and bought it with her.
With just the two of us, we decided to keep a running score. (I usually won - and talked trash to boot.) We played all three levels every time. There would be stalemates (as sometimes happens even in Monopoly), and some games lasted up to 6 or 8 hours - I forget; I wasn't really paying attention - but we never had a game last less than 2 hours. We broke up a year later. I kept the game, but not without her verbally objecting to it: "So I guess you are going to keep Tripoloy then, huh?" So I gave her $20 and she was gone. (True story.) Anyway, enough about me and my history with Triopoly. I love this game. It is not any more "three-dimensional" than Monopoly is, but there are certainly way more features and variations than Monopoly. Basically, in order to have three levels to play with, the cities were expanded to the three layers by adding famous streets. So now you can form a monopoly with 2 to 4 properties/streets, but that requires you to visit all three levels and act accordingly. (You can play with fewer levels, but I bought the game only to play all three.) As you work your way up, the prices climb and the rewards and penalties start to skew. Transportation was altered to be trucking, shipping, and airline - no more trains, Mr. 1930s. I really like the three-level interface and trying to acquire monopolies by visiting the different levels. Usually what happens is, the bottom level can get bought up first unless someone strategizes (and takes a risk) to go up the levels to try to block monopolies or buy level-specific streets (like the two from Phoenix, AZ that only exist on the 3rd Level). I also like the added game of chance when you land on the gambling tiles (Atlantic City and Las Vegas). There are other elements to really rake in the dough, but of course, it thus is easier to lose a lot of it, too. I recommend this game for people who enjoy countless hours of sitting, looking at a board, and strategizing (using mathematical and/or accounting abilities). I am a pretty disciplined person when it comes to neatness, order, organization, numbers, and finance. Hence, I love this game and don't mind the time requirements. Trying to find someone who will play with me is my biggest challenge, and I ask EVERYBODY I make friends with, "Do you like Monopoly?" If they say Yes, I then try to size them up for Triopoly. If you are an active sort that doesn't like to pay attention to details, have a hard time sitting in the same place for long periods of time, and hates reading and enforcing rules, why are you playing board games anyway?! Triopoly has a ton of rules (compared to quicker games out there) and requires you to be sharp - kind of like the game of Life with all the various meanings of the jobs, tiles, and monetary exchanges. If you don't have all your "i" dotted and "t" crossed on a turn-by-turn basis, you'll likely just want to put the game away and go watch TV. If you'd rather do the thinking for yourself, Triopoly offers you another opportunity to do so. But if you are like me and remember that Monopoly requires a certain personality to play, expect Triopoly to be the same. To read reviews on this Amazon message board where people were surprised to learn that Triopoly took so long, I can't understand their frustration. Those are probably the people who didn't even play Monopoly right and cut corners to make it easier for them. My dad only played Monopoly with us kids because we were gullible enough to fall for his cheating. He didn't even like the game, just beating his kids. Sadist, perhaps, but that is an example of people who should not expect Triopoly to be any different than Monopoly in terms of personality requirements.

Longing to create more non-TV time with my girlfriend during the Winter/Spring season, I took a chance and got Triopoly. She was skeptical at first and for good reason: she wasn't a board game player. Triopoly sat on the shelf for about 4 months until one day we were so bored that we decided to try it... and we can't get enough of the game!
Think of it as monopoly on steroids; the game has three levels of properties, a stock market and "travel cards" that send you to different destinations on the board (I actually have the international version). The properties do not increase in value, but are rather staggered at different points on the board. Thus, you need a dose of strategy to see which properties are worth it. Generally, the lower valued (yes, lower valued) properties are a better bet because there may be a travel card that goes to it and the improvements are cheaper to build. My girlfriend and I were on a 7-night cruise and played Triopoly five of the nights. We usually play 2 levels and will finish a game anywhere between 90 minutes and 3 hours (she usually wins). We've been able to finish a 2-level game in an hour and multiple games in the same night. The game does have typographical errors like "Madison Street" instead of "Madison Avenue". This has actually become a joke between the two of us. Also, the game can change at any moment. Anyone that has landed on Las Vegas and rolled three odds in a row can attest to that! A huge problem with the game is that properties on the third and fourth parts of the board are not landed on as much due to the travel cards, making for a somewhat repetitive game play. PROS: challenging, good for 2 players, enjoyable to play, "monopoly on steroids", a good value as opposed to other entertainment, good repeat play CONS: 3-level game (deluxe) is impossible to play with 2 players (consider handing out the deed cards before game play), errors on game cards, takes a while to play a game, need to design to incorporate all the properties more effectively

My friends and I had become obsessed with monopoly. We played every day at school and got together on weekends to play. But after a while we all got too good and it became a game of chance. Triopoly has changed that again for us as now we can learn a whole new game and a new way to strategize. Triopoly is a little expensive I believe but is still a great game to play.

This board game was the smartest buy for a board game I've ever done, besides RISK. Not only is it great for 2 players, it is great for parties. It's very easy to pick up, same as Monopoly rules. The board looks very nice and there are many ways to play. Great game!

Good concept. My 9 year old loved the idea as he is a big Monopoly fan. However, there are cards missing and several misprints on the cards and board . I would not recommend purchase until the company fixes the issues. In addition, the state in which the contents are put together is not professional. Items are thrown into the box without any organization. Stick with Hasbro and Monopoly.

Where do I begin.... First off, I really can't comment on game-play because the poor condition in which the "new" game arrived from the "factory" rendered it unplayable. The game arrived "brand new" and factory sealed, but when I opened the box it looked like a third grader haphazardly tossed pieces and cards into the box. Some of the properties had duplicate property cards, other properties on the board had no corresponding property cards. The dice were obviously purchased from the lowest bidder; they were paper light and one was cracked beyond repair. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the player tokens actually have lead particles floating in them as well. The "airline" travel cards had numerous written mistakes. The "currency" tray did not have enough slots for the various denominations included with the game. Varying ink tones and paper stocks are used for the game cards even when they are of the same category. This game is unplayable and was not a cheap purchase. My guess is that someone in a "business major" came up with this idea for a class project after one too many party drinks and made a poor attempt to market it to the public. What I am left with is an expensive and useless piece of junk taking up space and collecting dust on my gaming shelf.
I would not purchase this shoddily prepared game if I found it half-off at a bargain garage sale. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY!

I got this game for my brother because he is obsessed with monopoly. We played it during Christmas and it was a lot of fun. It did, however, have several flaws in type on the gameboard.

This game was so cheaply made that the paper money will probably tear after 1 play. In fact, the game board came with a noticeable tear on it.
But the horrible durability is the least of this game's defects. It has so many mistakes in the rules, cards, and on the board, that it is literally unplayable. Properties on the board do not have corresponding cards, properties are misnamed, money values are messed up... I could go on and on about the errors throughout this game. My teen received this as a Christmas gift, and got so frustrated with the errors in the game that we stopped playing and decided to return it. Worst part - we couldn't return it because we opened the box. Don't waste your money on this useless, terrible game. |
