Martin Denny on acid!!,

This review is from: Trip Tease (Audio CD)
I ran into Tipsy right about the same time that I was getting burned out on almost every other kind of music out there: rock and roll was dead, goth was too gloomy, I was too old to convincingly be punk, I tried rave music but it just didn't fit me, folk music was all sounding the same, and international music was hard to come by in my Kentucky hometown. Then, lo and behold, an ex-boyfriend did his one good deed for our whole acquaintance, and recommended this to me. My musical appetite was revived! Tipsy totally defies categorization. Yes, on a crude level, I suppose you could call them electronic, though I think they actually bring all their instruments into the studio and organically recreate the sound of electronic music. Their music veers in such diverse directions, though, that it is at times difficult to tell the music is even modern. If you own a swimming pool, this is music to lay out with and sip fruity green drinks from martini glasses with paper umbrellas. If you are a landlocked city dweller, this music can transport you to a little island called Tipsydonia, where the natives are friendly, the beaches are white, and there's a luau till dawn every night. If you live in the country and feel misunderstood, this CD will either make you feel that someone does understand your slightly wacky view of the world or make you so immensely cheered up that you will no longer care. Am I making my point? Whoever you are, you should buy this music and listen to it while driving, eating, dancing, reading, making love, studying, partying or any other common human activity. Beware, though...listening to this music in your sleep may cause sudden knowledge of the entire Tahitian language and a strange longing for cat-eye sunglasses and pina coladas...

hungover,

I bought this cd years ago when it was first released and it still remains on my all time favorite list. Here's what I heard: the CD consists of hundreds of different samples from lounge records of the 50s and 60s (including greats like Esquivel, Les Baxter and Martin Denny) but due to complications on getting permission for the samples, tipsy went into the studio and recreated the sounds of all the samples needed to create this great CD. It's fun listening to tracks like Space Golf and then playing the original lounge tracks from the 50s that make up the song. I always get a chuckle from the horn blasts of Mr.Excitement that are pulled from a James Bond theme song. But what's best about this CD is that it transcends almost every genre of music. It's lounge. It's trip- hop. It's dance. It's ambient. It's exotica. It's so lush and mellow and full of delicious sounds that ALL of my friends from grunge rockers to ravers love it. I always play it as backgound music when I have cocktail parties. I listen to it when I clean. I love this CD so much that I'm hungover from the years of listening to it. PLEASE OH PLEASE buy this! There is some much drivel out there that music which is new and unique and pushes the boundaries never get the attention that they deserve. This is one. I gaurantee that anyone buying this CD will love it. It's different , bizarre, cool, fun, uplifting and all around a pleasurable experience.

Wowie Zowie! This is pure sonic bliss! -Add one part lounge, two parts exotica, some sci-fi spy-fi film music influences and those keen 60's electronic sound effects, then kick it into hyperdrive and soar through the galaxy! Sometimes when I'm in a funk and can't seem to get up off the futon, I crawl over to my cd player and somehow manage to find my ever-faithful Tipsy cd and away I go! It's great for drawing, painting, cooking, cleaning or just staring at the end of your shoe with a strong cup of coffee in hand. Anyone who can't get into this is just a washed-up sourpuss. And can someone tell me why great stuff like this isn't being played on the radio? If only I were a dj...I'd show 'em all!

This cd is phat! It is absolutely one of the most original & weird albums i've ever heard. The music has a lounge, electronic, spaced-out, trippy, jazzy thing going on. I was so surprised at the depth of this album, i've had it for many years and have listened to it literally hundreds of times. Each track is crafted with such excellence and has such a unique sound that leaves your ear drums bursting for more. The fusion that emerges between all the samples, sound effects, and lounge lizard type beats simply amazes me. You can choose to listen to each piece as a whole or pick out each crazy sample, weird sound, or awesome loop. There is such a definite sound to this whole album, but yet each track has it's own distinct flavor. I really can't recommend this cd enough, it is one of the best and most unique albums i've EVER heard. Oh and i have listened to it while tripping as well and let me tell you, it only gets way better.

At first listen this music kind of scared me because it's so strange, but this stuff grows on you and is highly addictive. Maybe there's something subliminal going on, or something that taps into your sub-consciousness. The reviewer that said that this music is activity enhancing was right on the money. I like to play Trip Tease when I'm doing mundane tasks like waxing my car or assembling furniture. With this music, my productivity is enhanced and the work doesn't seem as boring as it would otherwise. Maybe they should play this music in factories to boost our national economic growth!

Aside from this too, like many others have commented, being one of my ALL TIME favorites (study music, mood music, inspiration, etc.) what I particularly love about certain types of musical compositions is trying to figure out "just how did they compile/generate that sound"?! Much like how in The Murmaids' classic "Popsicles, Icicles" I still wonder how they fully got that "Bloop, blee-blee-blee bloop.." sound on the organ (and/or whatever other instrument they used with it)! One of the cuts on "Trip Tease"- "Grossenhosen" I'm just resigned to believe the plinking xylophone sound playing in the background was made by running a coin over one of those giant novelty combs you get a carnival; since as a kid I used to do this with one around the house that sounded just like that! The other effects were brilliantly recaptured from older material (Denny, Esquival, etc.) as others have pointed out, and let's not forget a little bit of Lucia Pamela thrown in too! I've owned my copy of this for years and haven't braved the follow-up yet (but did buy the second vinyl release) for fear of the second time around not packing the same punch. One day, though!

Its hard to put this CD into a particular category, but I like it. Trip Tease contains the cleverest use of sound sampling that I have heard; mixing Jazz and Lounge music into new, beautiful sounding music. I highly recommend Tipsy's music.

You just can't get enough Tipsy. Every time you listen to it you hear something new that makes it even better. I have had it since '96 and I still listen to it every day.

Is it lounge? Is it electronica? Is it even from this planet? Who knows, who cares! Trip Tease is THE most innovative and unusual music I've ever heard. Every song is unique, yet that undeniably Tipsy sound is always there to surprise you with some new quirk. I like to get really stoned and let it transport me someplace I've never been.

All I can say is Tipsy is the best music on the planet. It is Naut Humon. Tim and Dave are geniuses in their own world of lounge. I just wish I would have know about them before 1996. My whole life would probably be more relaxiing.
