One of the most useful apps on my Kindle Fire
on December 25, 2011
TripAdvisor.com is a travel website that assists users in gathering travel information, posting reviews and opinions of travel-related content, and engaging in interactive travel forums. I've used TripAdvisor for years to find user reviews of hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions (such as museums, zoos, parks, nightlife, sports, etc.). I've even posted a few of my own reviews.
I was hoping that the Android app for TripAdvisor would be as helpful and easy to use as the website, and it is. The screen layout and fonts are excellent, with everything optimized for the smaller screens of mobile devices, and all the features of the website are there. Besides the restaurants, hotels, and tourist attractions, the app includes the user forums and the "Find a Cheap Flight" feature.
Information about hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions includes a map link. On my Kindle Fire, the link used the MapQuest App mapping, which is a Google Earth-type view.
If you've never used TripAdvisor, you're in for a treat. It has to be the single most extensive resource for travel information, and it's worldwide, not just the U.S. You can use it to check out restaurants in your own neighborhood, or plan a trip to a city on the other side of the world. You'll be astonished at the wealth of information in TripAdvisor's databases.
If you don't find what you're looking for in the search features, go to the forums, and if you don't see an answer to your question, post your question online. The TripAdvisor community is very active, and you'll usually get answers within a few hours.
