About the Author

Alan Bennett was first on stage with the Oxford Theatre Group in 1959. He collaborated on the revue Beyond the Fringe, which opened in Edinburgh in 1960 and then to the West End and Broadway. His collection of diary entries, essays and reviews, Writing Home (1994), was a bestseller. His other works include: The Wind in the Willows, The Madness of George III, and Talking Heads.

It's the deceptive simplicity of the characters that draw me into Alan Bennett's work. The elderly couple meeting a social worker for a review of their circumstances slowly pulls back the curtain on all their lives. Your sympathies suddenly shift from the novice interviewer to the depth, kindness and life experience of the mature couple. The plots,seemingly light as a spider's web trap you and more importantly you ponder over these characters over and over again long after the plays have finished.
