amusing reinterpretations of songs, August 1, 2005
This review is from: Triple M Musical Challenge V.3: 3rd Time Lucky (Audio CD)
MMM, an Australian radio station, poses the following challenge to artists who stop by their studios: play a well-known song that is of a style very different to the style of the performing artist. The results range from hysterical to poignant.
This CD is the third CD in the series, and is probably the best of the series to own. It's a two-disc collection: one disc of new tracks, and one disc of the best from the previous two releases.
One of the new tracks is Shawn Mullins covering Wham!'s 'Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go', an amusing little jaunt through that song. The Red Army Choir (if you're not familiar with them, they are a Russian choir comprised of 200 men that usually does more traditional fare) covers 'Sex Bomb' with laugh-out-loud results. Human Nature cover the Guns'n'Roses classic 'Sweet Child O' Mine'.
From the classic tracks, my absolute favourite is Australia's Paul Kelly covering Prince's 'Little Red Corvette'. Paul takes the song and makes it his own, turning it into a mournful dirge for a lover. Kiddie favourites The Wiggles cover 'It's a Long Way to the Top' in their own inimitable style, resulting in a song for the adults who have kids who love this band: it's nothing short of hysterical, and shows that these men have a great sense of humour about what they do.
Most people, when they pick up this album, notice that Willie Nelson covers Nirvana's anthem 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. Sadly, the interest wanes once they hear it: he only does the chorus, and kinda peters out. It seems like it should be more interesting than it really is.
This is a great album to add to your music collection. I like using it for parties as background music. It often serves as a conversation starter: people notice that they know the song or the artist, but can't figure out why. It's a good way to get people to chat with others as they try to determine what the song is.
