There's not much to say about a swipe reader. There are two basic types: HID and keyboard emulator. This particular unit is of the latter type. Basically, in swiping a card, it sends characters to the computer just as if you'd typed them on a keyboard. (You can test this by opening up a text editor and then swiping a card)

They work like they're supposed to, there are no drivers to install. The USB cable was plenty long, and the package included some velcro sticky pads for mounting. This unit is mono-directional, mono-sided, meaning the card has to be swiped a certain direction, facing a certain way. No big deal. For a simple, cheap reader, this can't be beat.

Three points to note:
1) This card reader is NOT Mac OSX compatible (and we'd even asked to confirm this before purchasing). We're computer savvy here and tried it in Snow Leopard and Leopard on four machines without luck. It is read as a keyboard at first but no machines would recognize input from it (except running it in Windows via Parallels which was a good test doesn't really help for routine use). Despite our searches and the seller trying to suggest a shareware driver, we were unable to find a Mac driver for this item. We wasted a lot of time trying (if you find one, let us know!).

2) Even for Windows, this device requires a driver. The seller does NOT include the driver, a link to the driver, or any instructions at all inside the packaging. You have to e-mail them to bug them and say it doesn't work before they send you a link to a Windows-only driver.

3) This company is shipping from China so read the reviews and return policies carefully beforehand as the shipping time and expectations for returns and exchanges may be more than you bargained for.

I received the item, plugged it in and Windows gave an error bubble that the USB device was malfunctioning. The indicator light just flashed on the device. I inserted the drivers disk to find it had not been burnt. Windows asked if I wanted to add files to the blank disk, I did not. The indicator light just flashed. I returned it the next day.
