Product Description

The Triplett 3388 handheld wire and cable tracing kit for finding live wires on 120V and 220V circuits has an inductive tracer with audio and visual signals, and a tone generator that has a warble or pulsed tone, with adjustable pitch. The tracer has a field effect transistor (FET) for detecting electrical fields, and integrated circuit (IC) for detecting frequency. The tracer beeps and flashes a red light to indicate magnetic fields. The tone generator uses a warble or pulsed tone with adjustable pitch to overcome interference, and guide the tracer to wires. The tracer and tone generator are each cased in acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic for strength and light weight. The tracer can detect a signal from the tone generator up to three feet away in open air. This kit can be used to locate buried wires up to six inches deep, and trace wires up to 1,000 feet long. The kit has a one year warranty, and is often used by home remodelers and in the telephone, electrical, and security industries to identify specific wires, trace their path, and find malfunctioning sections.

The tone generator connects to live wires with either a 2 ft. or 5 ft. test lead, with interchangeable ends that accept flat or pointed test probes, or alligator clips (included). The tracer has an earphone jack that accepts a 1/8” (3.5 mm), 8 to 50 Ohms mono or stereo earphone plug, and automatically mutes the speaker. Tone generator dimensions are 3.5 x 4.5 x 1.5 inches (H x W x D). (H is height, the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back.) Tracer dimensions are 1-7/8" (diameter) speaker, 1-3/8" (diameter) body, 7-1/2" (length). The tone generator can be powered by AC current when connected to an AC line or by a 9V battery (sold separately). The tracer operates on a 9V battery (sold separately).

Wire tracers are used to locate wires in walls or underground locations. They identify circuit breakers and short or open circuits, which break electrical connections and prevent optimal electrical flow. Wire tracers are commonly used by home remodelers, and in the telephone, electrical, and video industries.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works as described December 4, 2012

This device works exactly as described. I was able to trace energized and non-energized wire without much hassle. Once you understand the product and read the manual you can use this product effectively with minimal issues. I was able to trace my dog fence, some live outlets throughout my house and now I am going to take it to work (I am a Master Electrician). It has a feature called "TrueTrace" which helped me identify the exact wire I was looking for. I did use this to identify a breaker, but it is hard because if you read the manual this product is not specifically designed to find breakers. That is why they have certain products that do just that. I will admit I was wiry because of the reviews, but figured I could return if it did not meet my criteria. It went above my expectations. Now that I have used this product I am going to take a look at other triplett products. Overall, product worked well, felt well built, and was designed well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice kit November 13, 2013

My daughter called to say they had no electricity in the master bath of a home we own so my husband went over and systematically went through every outlet, switch, etc. in the master bath. He checked out the attic where power came down to the ceiling fan in the master bedroom. He found absolutely nothing wrong. No flipped breaker, no loose/broken wiring, etc. We were at the point where we had to call an electrician when he said that if he could trace the circuits we could save the hundreds of dollars for an electrician. We found this on Amazon and bought it. Works like a charm. Found out that the bedroom beside the master had a broken wire in a receptacle where the builder had tapped off of to bring power to the master bathroom. After the broken wire was replaced by my husband the master bedroom was no longer dark. My husband has many years of experience with electricity even though he is not an electrician. I'm not sure I'd recommend someone unfamiliar with electricity doing what he did with the receptacles/switches/fans. The unit is now in Ohio where our brother-in-law is having a similar problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works just like they said it would August 7, 2012

I have tried other versions of these kind of tracers but this one works better than I would have anticipated. I was able to easily find wiring behind drywall/shear wall construction. Many similar (and cheaper) tracers can't do this. I have to assume that it is because this one has a better receiver/probe than others. As far as I can determine, it can see hidden cables up about 6 inches away but it can be significantly less depending upon what you are looking through. For example, concrete tends to block the signal. However, for most applications, I would tend to believe that this would do the job; it worked great for my applications.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works but picks up the local radio station January 29, 2014

Must be using the same frequency. Kinda funny but the hound unit puts out more than enough signal to drown out the radio station.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for the cost February 26, 2014

I had read reviews and the manufacturers info and I would say that it preformed as advertised. I think if it was used often it would probably work in many cases. If you want some thing that works better I think you will need to spend a lot more money.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not good for finding breakers February 14, 2014

This is a pretty good unit for tracing wires behind the walls and through the attic. They do warn though, that if your traced wire gets bundled anywhere, you will have signal bleed into those adjacent wires. You do. You can scale back the signal strength to combat this though. In my case, It's pretty much hopeless trying to find a particular breaker attached to an outlet though. At least 8 breakers had a VERY strong signal, none of which were the actual breaker I was looking for. They include the true trace functionality that should help in this case, but they make a reference that it's not to be used with the packaged hound. Eh, just leaves room for more accessories to compliment the signal generator.

This works good for our maintenance department. They can find wires and not get hurt or have to dig around.

4.0 out of 5 stars OK but takes a little getting used to February 7, 2014

Getting the right sensitivity setting is tough, but it does some pretty long runs. Got it 'cause my electrician had one and I was chasing wires myself. Finding the 'plug in' sensors better(for circuit breakers) as when chasing circuits, turning off breaker shuts off the sender. This unit sends no matter what. Find the Model 3399 a little better for chasing the open circuits...
