Power problems—including blackouts, brownouts, power surges and line noise—threaten your investment! They can damage or destroy PCs and other expensive equipment, wipe out valuable data and files, and degrade component performance. Get protected against these all-too-common power threats with Tripp Lite's AVR550U desktop UPS system. It provides reliable battery backup that can keep a basic desktop PC operational for up to 17 minutes during blackouts. Automatic voltage regulation (AVR) corrects low-voltage conditions (brownouts) back to safe 120V power without draining the UPS battery. Surge suppression and EMI/RFI line noise filtering prevent hardware damage and performance problems such as poor-quality audio and video output.
The AVR550U's 550VA/300-watt power rating provides ample capacity for a wide range of home and office PC setups, workstations, point-of-sale systems and more. It features 4 battery-supported AC outlets for computer, monitor and other vital system peripherals, plus 4 surge suppression-only outlets for accessories not requiring battery support. One set of tel/DSL (RJ11) jacks protects connected equipment on a tel/DSL line. One USB communication port plus free PowerAlert software (available via Web download) enables unattended system shutdown and file saves in case of a prolonged power failure. The AVR550U comes with $100,000 Ultimate Lifetime Insurance coverage for connected equipment (USA/Canada only) and a 3-year product warranty.

With reliable battery backup, automatic voltage regulation, surge suppression, line noise filtering, tel/DSL jacks and an HID-compliant USB port, the AVR550U offers a complete power protection solution for a wide range of home and office electronics. The AVR550U features a split-outlet design with 8 total AC outlets: 4 to provide battery backup support and surge protection for computers, monitors and other critical components; 4 to provide surge protection only for peripherals such as printers and scanners that do not need battery backup.
AVR protects your equipment from incremental hardware damage, data loss and performance problems that can be caused by low-voltage conditions (brownouts) and overvoltages. The AVR550U automatically corrects brownouts as low as 83V and overvoltages as high as 147V back to 120V without drawing on battery backup power that may be needed to support your equipment during a blackout.
99% efficiency saves energy, lowering your electric bill and reducing your carbon footprint. High-efficiency models also consume fewer resources during manufacture and distribution.
UPS battery backup support enables you to work through short power failures, and provides time to save files and perform an orderly system shutdown in case of a prolonged blackout. The AVR550U features an internal battery that provides 3 min. of battery support for a full load (300 watts), 9 min. for a half load (150 watts) or 17 min. for a basic desktop PC. During normal operation, incoming utility power keeps the UPS battery fully charged so that backup power will always be available when needed.
A sudden power surge or spike can damage or destroy electronic components and wipe out irreplaceable data. The AVR550U features built-in surge suppression to protect all connected components and the data they contain.
Various electromagnetic and radio sources can cause disruptive interference on the AC line. This line noise is a common cause of incremental hardware damage, data corruption and audio/video performance problems. The AVR550U incorporates technology that filters out disruptive line noise, preventing it from affecting your equipment.

The AVR550U includes one set of tel/DSL (RJ11) jacks to protect a standard telephone, fax, dialup modem or DSL connection.
The AVR550U features an HID-compliant USB port (USB cable included). Used with Tripp Lite's free PowerAlert software (available from Tripp Lite as a Web download), this USB port enables safe unattended system shutdown and file saves in the event of a prolonged power failure. The USB port also enables integration with built-in power management and auto shutdown features of Windows®, Linux® and Mac OS® X.
The AVR550U features a space-saving, ultra-compact housing that fits on a desktop, a shelf or almost anywhere. Its 6-ft. power cord features a right-angle plug that allows furniture to be placed flush against the wall. The AVR550U's housing is equipped with integrated keyhole mounting slots for secure wall-mount installation.
The AVR550U is manufactured in compliance with strict RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) guidelines to minimize the use of hazardous materials, and its internal battery is 100% recyclable.
The AVR550U comes with $100,000 Ultimate Lifetime Insurance coverage for connected equipment and a 3-year warranty.

Nice but smelly,

This unit has been working fine, and I like the self-test feature. The one significant drawback -- based on my reading of other reviews, this unit is not alone in having this issue -- is that the damn thing smells quite strongly, something like the smell of new plastic. At first I thought the plastic case was just made out of particularly smelly plastic, but in reading around, and now through personal experience, it seems to be related to the charging process. The battery must be releasing something, or the heat of charging is making the case or other parts smell. Someone else reported their Belkin unit stopped smelling after about a week, mine is now a week old and smells less but definitely still smells. An unexpected bummer. I was getting tired with APC units failing, so I tried this unit for a change. I hope it lasts a long time, but only if it stops smelling!Update: It stopped smelling after about a month.

My unit came in DOA. Will have to RMA it. After getting it in DOA, which is rare as most companies actually test there units before sending them out, I checked out more extensive reviews on other web sites where many complained of the unit working for a period of time (weeks to months) and then just shutting off while they were in the middle of working even though there was no power loss. Others complained of the smell. I fortunately did not experience either of these issues as mine would not even power up at all. There are units from Eaton available for a similar price that are much better quality would recommend these over this unit or its cousins.

Do Not Buy,

I purchased this unit in Jan. 2010 to backup my desktop PC. It powered off by itself so often some of my files got corrupted. Tech support insisted the unit was overloaded by my PC which draws less than 300W and within the limit of the backup unit. This unit even powered off when no equipment plugged into it. I switch to another brand with similar spec and have no problem at all.
