Product Description

Tripp Lite's DNET1 offers network ethernet line surge suppression for 100Base-T, 10Base-T, Token Ring, AS400/Sys3x and RS422 applications. Convenient RJ45 input and output connections with included 5 inch ethernet patch cable allows convenient placement at the protected device network connection. Surge suppression is handled with balanced arrays of high-speed avalanche diodes that divert excess energies created by electrostatic discharges, faulty wiring or lightning away from network interface connections. Tripp Lite network surge suppressors reduce blown NIC cards, garbled network transmissions, system lock-ups and hard equipment failure by safely shunting dataline surges to ground. Lifetime warranty

5.0 out of 5 stars Saved my equipment, February 15, 2011

This review is from: Tripp Lite DNET1 RJ45 100 10Base-T and AS400 Network Dataline Surge Suppressor for NICs Terminals and Hubs (Personal Computers)
I had two of these units, one on each end of an ethernet run between two side-by-side buildings. The electrical service to one of the buildings went haywire when the Power Company's Neutral wire open-circuited at the transformer, making it essentially ungrounded. These units ensured no damage to my equipment, even though they both got warm enough to deform their plastic housings.

Use these anytime you have an etherent data connection that runs outside.

3.0 out of 5 stars Does not work with Gigabit switches or NIC cards, September 11, 2011

This review is from: Tripp Lite DNET1 RJ45 100 10Base-T and AS400 Network Dataline Surge Suppressor for NICs Terminals and Hubs (Personal Computers)
I've never owned anything by Tripp Lite but know that they have an excellent reputation for quality. This review is more of a warning to those who might make the same mistake as I did instead of a true product review. So you understand my background I am a bit of a computer novice, not an expert but someone who builds his own PC's and works in the IT (Server and Storage and Networking) industry from a more sales and marketing role, with some responsibility for technical knowledge and training. I am so used to networking equipment being generally backwards compatible that it didn't dawn on me to check the type of network compatibility on the DNET1. But when I plugged it in (properly with ground to computer chassis, Line from the wall in to Line input on device, and Equipment output on device to computer Gigabit NIC) to the NIC on my desktop there started to occur a very strange message. About every second windows would say "internet disconnected" and then a second later "Internet connected". It would just keep doing this. The connection was cycling in and out. It just kept dropping the connection and reconnecting. At first I thought I had a faulty device so I tried another DNET1 I had purchased at the same time for another computer. Same Thing. I scratched my head until I noticed that the specs on the DNET1 were for 10/100 networks and not 10/1000(Gigabit). So I grabbed an old dusty 10/100 pci nic to see if it still had life in it and wala, it did. So after making sure the 10/100 card was still functioning I hooked up the DNET1 into the new 10/100 card and it did work, but it was very very very slooow. Like a 56k modem slow. All I can deduct from this is that even though my Gigabit Switch can detect 10/100 cards and work compatibly with them, the DNET1 cannot work well with Gigabit Switches or cards. Although I haven't had a chance to test it yet, I'm giving the DNET1 the benefit of the doubt that it would work fine if I had a 10/100 switch paired with a 10/100 NIC. This seems like an over-site to me. When new Gigabit Switches can work fine and be backwards compatible with any 10/100 NIC, why can't it seem to work with this DNET1. Seems like more of a problem with the design of the DNET1 than the switch to me.

great tiny piece of equipment for your NIC. We have used them to protect several NICs in our network and the performance has been just great!
I recommend them for those techies who treasure the NIC and wouldn't like them to die on em!
