Book Description

April 18, 2009

An opportunity to escape a dull summer -- and perhaps to find a future for herself after high school - persuades Rainey Williamson to join a school-sponsored program that will take her and five other teenagers on an eight-week road trip across Canada. The challenge of this journey is heightened, in view of the fact that Rainey has had to wear an artificial leg from birth. On the eve of her getaway, a crucial complication arises: she finds out that the mother who left when she was just a few months old is alive and well and living in Squamish, B.C., directly on the route of the student expedition. What's more, her mother now wants to see her.

Rainey's ambivalent at the prospect, to say the least. The cross-country trip begins, and she soon meets the others who become friends and comrades, all with issues and challenges to deal with. Rainey discovers her own strengths as she struggles with the decision about whether or not to meet her mother and figuring out what she might do with her life. In the end she discovers that her family tree is more extensive than she'd thought - and that taking chances provides perspective, opportunity, and a springboard from which to launch her future - and even a way back home. The story is laced with Heather Waldorf's customary sharp intelligence and sense of humour - and her understanding of the themes teenagers are most engaged with.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8 Up—"…the most important thing about the WESTEX trip isn't so much about how far we travel. It's about who we come to be along the way." Rainey and five other teens begin an eight-week school-sponsored educational/survival trek across Canada. Each member of the "Canadian Six Pack," as they call themselves, comes with a backstory. Rainey's challenge is heightened because she has an artificial leg and she learns that her mother, who abandoned her as a baby, lives near one of their stops and wants to meet her. As the trip progresses, the individuals bond and become part of a team. Slowly their stories rise to the surface, revealing a personal angst that teens everywhere can identify with. The group dynamic intensifies with a sharing and understanding thought impossible at the onset. Waldorf has written a unique story in which six very different young people are united in a common cause. Told with wit and humor, this fast-paced novel has character development that is extraordinary. Most young adults will easily identify with at least one person or theme.—Sharon Morrison, Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Durant, OK

From Booklist

Rainey has a congenital amputation and wears a prosthesis on her left leg. Happily, the self-sufficient 17-year-old has no problem with that; what she’s most concerned about is her sketchy future. She wants to be an artist, but her father thinks she should settle for a more realistic career. Hoping eight weeks in the woods will help her resolve this dilemma, Rainey signs up for a study/camping trip, but things quickly grow complicated when she “breaks up” with troubled Carlos, meets hunky Alain, and learns that her birth mother, whom she’s never seen, wants to meet her. Yes, there is a great deal going on in this coming-of-age novel, including the introduction of a lot of Canadian history (it is a study trip, after all). Fortunately, Rainey is a likable character, and her nicely wry sense of humor tends to smooth out some of the lumpier exposition. And did I mention the scene where she clobbers an angry bear with her prosthesis? Grades 8-12. --Michael Cart

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book From Start To Finish, June 28, 2010
This review is from: Tripping (Paperback)
This is such a smart, witty and refreshing young adult novel. The main character Rainey is one of the most interesting and unforgetable heroines I've ever read about. The fact she has a prosthetic leg might surprise or even shock you at first but this is not a book about a girl with a disability. This is a book about tormented relationships and unlikely friendships. It's also about disovering yourself away from home. Six teenagers were chosen from six different schools for a study group type camping trip that takes place over two months in the Canadian mountains. Fueled by family issues, love triangles and an over exposure to nature, the teenagers soon find themselves growing and bonding in ways they hadn't expected. Most the characters will charm you by the end and if you think you'll be able to predict the outcome... think again cause you never know what the future holds!

5.0 out of 5 stars facing inner demons on a cross-Canada trip, November 23, 2011

This review is from: Tripping (Paperback)
Rainey, the 16-year-old narrator of Tripping, moves from a small town to Toronto, leaving her home, her friends, and her boyfriend behind. A school-sponsored eight-week study/camping trip seems to promise an escape from everything she hates about the big city--including her new stepmother. Imagine her surprise and chagrin when the driver of the expedition turns out to be a young man on whom she's had a crush for weeks, and who seems displeased to see her as one of the six student travelers.

Rolling across Canada in a big, old, puke-green passenger van provides plenty of opportunities for things to go wrong, from engine trouble to bear attacks. Rainey narrates her adventure in a light, slightly self-deprecating tone. Her honesty includes a matter-of-fact attitude toward the prosthetic leg she wears because of a birth defect. She's less casual about the discovery that the trip will give her a chance to meet the mother who abandoned her 15 years earlier.

Everyone on this journey has some kind of secret that is gradually revealed as the unlikely assortment of travelers share funny, sad, exciting, and poignant moments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Book, August 29, 2010
This review is from: Tripping (Paperback)
This book is amazing, and wonderfully well written. It's full of wit and humor, making it a fun must-read. You can definitely identify yourself with one or more of the characters. Each character has a very different personality, yet everyone bonds with each other nicely. Although there are some mishaps dealing with love and fear, the 6 teens rise to the top. By the end, each realizes their growth due to their fellow campers. They have learned to form new relationships and reconcile old ones. This is an amazing book, that gives faith to all teens letting them know that adults, such as Heather Waldorf, really do understand the teenage mindset and lifestyle.
