5.0 out of 5 stars Harder then A Place in the Sun, but really good
Lit fans everywhere have been hearing songs off A Place in the Sun on the radio. Some, like Ziplock and Miserable, have made it on the infamous TRL. So its not suprising that Lit has gained a lot more fans, followers of good music and teenyboppers alike. However, these fans have furthered their Lit obsession by going out and buying Tripping the Light Fantastic...

3.0 out of 5 stars Lit's OK Debut
Well, I ordered this CD because I love A Place in the Sun. It's OK, not great. If you're expecting another album like A Place in the Sun, don't get this. Make sure you listen to the sound samples before you order.

5.0 out of 5 stars Harder then A Place in the Sun, but really good, March 9, 2000
This review is from: Tripping the Light Fantastic (Audio CD)
Lit fans everywhere have been hearing songs off A Place in the Sun on the radio. Some, like Ziplock and Miserable, have made it on the infamous TRL. So its not suprising that Lit has gained a lot more fans, followers of good music and teenyboppers alike. However, these fans have furthered their Lit obsession by going out and buying Tripping the Light Fantastic. Being that it was re-released it seemed more noticible to the general public and ultimately, more of Lit's new fans bought it. Tripping the Light Fantastic surprised many of Lit's new followers. It's harsher sound was shocking compared to the melodies and mellow lyrics of A Place in the Sun. At first, it seemed that Lit had become a totally different band with their second album, much lighter and happier, but still sell-outs. Actually, that's not true. Upon listening to Tripping the Light Fantastic repeatedly, fans can realize that many things are the same about the two CDs, from the way the accoustic guitar and base guitar are used to the band's love of old cars, esp. Cadillacs. The idea of the band being sell-outs was totally disproven after going to a Lit concert March 1 and seeing the guys perform. (They were great) So, Lit fans, be not afraid of Tripping the Light Fantastic. It will become just as good, if not better, then A Place in the Sun once you recognize the differences. And if you don't have A Place in the Sun yet, be sure to pick that up too. Lit is a great band that deserves to be recognized, and you won't be disappointed. to the band's love

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it and Give it Time, June 11, 2000
This review is from: Tripping the Light Fantastic (Audio CD)
I say that because, if you're a fan of their RCA debut, A Place In the Sun, this one's gonna need time to grow on you. But nonetheless, it's awesome! Nearly everything is heavier here, with perhaps the exception of "Bitter." That track was the only single released off this album, and it's maybe the only one that echoes Lit's sound today. If you really compare the two CDs, Lit definitely hasn't done a 360. They've just evolved from whatever angst was plaguing them during that time. Anyway, this is an AWESOME CD that you won't regret buying. If you do feel that after the first listen, please give it time to grow on you. It will!

4.0 out of 5 stars Different sound, June 22, 2000

Buying this album after "Place In the Sun", I was quite shocked with the initial difference I heard. After a listen or 2 more though, I noticed that it wasn't a DIFFERENT sound, but more of a RAWER sound. A Jay's singing improved quite a bit between this album and "Place In the Sun", but the rawness of his voice on this album is pretty damn cool too. Some tunes that stand out for me are "Habib" and "Bitter". I gave it 4 stars, cause I feel they have improved and grown musically as a band since this album, but it's still a great cd. Just keep in mind that the sound isn't quite the same as "Place", but it's still got that Lit attitude. Worth the buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitely Worth Buying, December 19, 1999

Very different and much harder than A Place in the Sun, but still very good. If you like the title song off of A Place in the Sun, you'll probably like this. However, if you want to buy Lit for what you've heard on the radio or if you're new to Lit, buy A Place in the Sun before you get this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars The more screaming and guitars, the better., January 2, 2000

Lit truly expose all with " Tripping the Light Fantastic". It is far more expressive then " A Place in the Sun" which basicly has many ballads about love and relationships.During the time period of this album, the members of Lit seem kind of "casino crazy" which makes up many aspects of their album. It's great how A.Jay Popoff screams on this album. I believe the more screaming, the more passionate the artist is about their music. This album is great for people who love screaming and guitars

4.0 out of 5 stars Where they finally made a full album, August 11, 2005
This review is from: Tripping the Light Fantastic (Audio CD)
Well, now they are back on an indie label, but Lit are nothing short of exciting on their first full-length album, "Tripping the Light Fantastic". If you're expecting the sunny pop-punk of the later two albums, "A Place in the Sun" and "Atomic", you might be disappointed. Oh well, once you get used to this album you'll find it's possibly the most fun album that they've done.

One thing to check out is the early recording of "No Big Thing", which is done in a slightly more rough production and not quite in the same way as the polished "Place" version. This album has all types of sounds. The metal sound you hear that they like is heard in a few songs, even. I'm glad that the band re-found themselves recently, because this is just what Lit is all about. They make songs that have a bunch of flair and talent. Songs like "Bitter" have the clear Nirvana influence; elsewhere there are songs like "Habib" that are totally unique with great Lit melodies and then there's near-surf guitar riffage of "My World", with some really good melodies from them. The riff kind of reminds me of "Warped" by RHCP. It kind of reminds me of hardcore in some spots, like when A. Jay screams on "Amount to Nothing" and its rhythm break. "Dozer" starts out a bit toned down, and while a slower moment, does not lack any distortion. They still talk about their love for the "Cadillac", if you want some of that. This album is meant for repeat listens. The sound is varied yet totally focused. In fact the mixture of that shows their ability of great song writing. You may think they were an overnight band, but this proves here that's the last thing that Lit was.

I think that I like it on the same level as "Sun", but I think that now I prefer the self-titled to this. To me, that's a continuation of what they were doing here, stripped of pressure from RCA (now they're on Nitrus) and Don Gilmore. The latter makes me proud because I personally feel that's why people think they "sold out" later. They are a band of their own and on here there is grunge, metal, hardcore, punk, and a bunch of their old influences put in here. Even you elitists will be biting your tongues at this one. And maybe you'll want to get "Five Smokin' Tracks", although that's only really worthy for the remake of "Stain". The other four are demos of what have since appeared on this album. Not as "Sun"-ny as you might expect but it is very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Different but AWSOME, March 15, 2002
This review is from: Tripping the Light Fantastic (Audio CD)
Though at first you might be shocked by how different "tripping the light fantastic" is from Lit's later albums, if you give it a chance you will find that it is filled with excellent songs. Yes, this album does have a harder edge, and some songs do have screaming and very loud guitars and aren't nearly as pop oriented as later lit, but the songs are great. Every song is filled to the brim with emotion and power. In fact my favorite Lit song overall is "dozer," which is found on this album. So if you are a lit fan or a rock fan buy this cd and give it a chance, it will blow you away.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lit's "Trip"py Adventure, June 23, 2001
By
Chris (Bellevue WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tripping the Light Fantastic (Audio CD)
Lit's debut album, Tripping The Light Fantastic, is a much more different album from the Lit we all know now. Now, realize that this is Lit's first album, so give it time to grow on you. It's much more hard rock, and not so much Vegas pop-rock as A Place In The Sun was. Tripping has a distinctly angry sound to it. Some songs involve screaming only. The songs are fast-paced, intense and even strange (check out "Explode"). Otherwise, it's actually a really great album. It takes a good 2 or 3 listens to get it. But, after that, it's a guaranteed thrill. It has the Lit sound, the Lit flare, the Lit attitude. It has some pretty powerful tracks on it. "Bitter" and "Cadillac" are the most fun. Even if you don't like it the first time you listen, try it again and again and you will find yourself coming to with it. It may be a different sound, but remember, kids...this is their very first major record. Just pump it up loud while washing a car on a summer's day, and then you'll see that on the inside, it's a really great album. But, don't get too into it, for it's edgy, angry .... You don't wanna break your car windows while washing it, now do you?

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Place in the Sun, December 18, 1999
This review is from: Tripping the Light Fantastic (Audio CD)
I loved A Place in the sun, so I eagerly awaited this CD. However, I was pretty disappointed with Tripping the Light Fantastic. This is much more hardcore than Place in the Sun. DO NOT buy this if you want more catchy riffs and harmonic vocals. This is not to say there are not good songs on it. While there are no ultra-catchy songs like My Own Worst Enemy, Bitter and Fuel are good, along with the earlier No Big Thing. Other than them, I had a hard time getting into the CD and listening to it beginning-to-end. It is easy to see that they matured significantly. So, in summary, if you are a casual fan, this CD is probably not for you, but if you are a diehard Lit fan, get it.
