Die Ausgabe bietet in Band 1 den mittelhochdeutschen Originaltext von Gottfrieds Tristan-Fragment sowie in Band 2 eine moderne bersetzung und eine umfassende Einf hrung in das Werk. Der ber hmte Liebesroman wurde um 1200/1220 verfasst. Der Tristan-Stoff ist gemeineurop isch; Gottfrieds direkte Quelle ist vermutlich die Fassung des Thomas von Britanje. Der Roman erz hlt, wie Tristan Isolde kennen lernt und wie die Ehebruchsbeziehung der beiden Liebenden verl uft. Denn Isolde ist mit Marke verheiratet, aber durch den verh ngnisvollen Zaubertrank an Tristan gebunden. Das Dreiecksverh ltnis bleibt nicht unverborgen, doch immer wieder kann Marke von der Keuschheit des Paares berzeugt werden, u. a. in der ber hmten Minnegrotten-Szene, in der Marke die beiden unschuldig schlafend findet. Schlie lich muss Tristan aber doch aus Cornwall fliehen. Der Roman bricht ab mit der Erz hlung von Isolde Wei hand, in die Tristan sich in der Fremde verliebt. - Der Roman ist h chst kunstvoll komponiert und gebaut und geh rt neben Wolframs "Parzival" zu den Gipfelleistungen der deutschen Literatur des Mittelalters. Der Marold'sche Text ist die bis heute g ltige Standardedition.
