Book Description

This critical discography of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde opens with an introduction that illustrates the challenges the opera poses to performers. The discography lists all complete recordings, all major selections, and hundreds of individually recorded vocal and instrumental excerpts from 1901 to 1999. Information was researched in major public collections and libraries in France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Pirate recordings and fictitious conductors are identified, and an extensive list of arrangements from the opera, ranging from piano to jazz ensemble, and a list of performances on video are included. This unique discography will appeal to Wagnerian scholars, opera fans, and record collectors. Of special interest is a listing of the timings of complete performances, including some early Bayreuth performances not on disc and more than 200 recordings of the Prelude and arrangements of the Liebestod.

Review

“...Brown provides a superb evaluation of Wagnerian singing and interpretation in the twentieth century. Recommended.”–The Opera Journal

“This is a comprehensive discography with lots of detail and a critical introduction to the recordings.... If Tristan is a special interest for you, you'll want it.”–American Record Guide

“...an elegant piece of impressive scholarship, meticulously researched and no well off Wagner enthusiast should miss it,”–Wagner News

“This is an invaluable edition to Greenwood Press's growing list of discographies....Altogether a must for Wagner collectors.”–Gramaphone

“Brown's comments reveal thorough and careful listening to the recordings in question: his views are typically well founded and often insightful....collectors of Wagner recordings, both individuals and music libraries, will find this volume invaluable.”–Notes

“This excellent book, which follows the same author's exemplary Parsifal on Record of 1992, provides all the discographical information on Wagner's masterpiece that anyone except an insanely competitive fellow discographer could possibly want, and arranged in the most lucid way....Brown displays his taste, passion and depth of concern with the work, in prose which is invariably fresh, often witty, and shows an enviable gift for the telling, evocative phrase....The author deserves our warmest gratitude.”–International Record Review

“Discographic information is admirably complete....This work will appeal to Tristan lovers.”–Fanfare
