3.0 out of 5 stars the church needs this
Good message for those in the Body of Christ who demand an impossible level of the Ephesians 5 passage. The controlling and domineering husband/father in the story got it wrong and his wife participated in it. Nancy Rue wrote a solid story about how a tragedy challenges that family dynamic, but also offers hope for redemption when we miss the mark. The emotions were...

5.0 out of 5 stars deep powerful modern day character study, May 20, 2006
This review is from: Tristan's Gap (Paperback)
In Delaware Serena Soltanis lives for her family. She will do anything to make her husband Nick comfortable and to insure her daughter sixteen years old Serena and son ten years old Max are safe. Her community especially her church sees her as a role model in raising children. She is so highly regarded Serena heads a local church group that counsels, advices and mentors young mothers.

Everything is perfect in Serena's world until Tristan suddenly vanishes without warning. Serena is stunned and begins to doubt her parenting skills. While her raging spouse holds Serena culpable over the embarrassment of their teen runaway, she worries until Tristan returns home. Serena begins to soul search as she ponders coming down harder on Tristan, but wonders if perhaps loosening the control to allow some freedoms might be the answer. She seeks a balance between safety and freedom for she fears tighter control will drive Tristan away again.

This interesting family drama focuses in on the issue of teen safety vs. freedom. Serena and Tristan are wonderful characters as the mom wants her children safe in a dangerous world, but has stifled her daughter. Nick is an idiot though part of his reaction is fear that he hides from his spouse. As Serena struggles with when you let them go (mindful of Gibran's The prophet), fans obtain a deep powerful modern day character study.

This book is a real page turner. I really enjoyed it and would highly recommend it. It kept you guessing and wanting to know more. It was real to life with God at the center. It helps with the questions of trust and faith in God, and how "problems" in life can bring you closer to Him.

I loved this book and could not stop reading after I started it. It has a good message and is interesting from start to finish. You never really know what is going on in a family or who your best friend might turn out to be when the going gets tough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading, January 16, 2012

"Tristan's Gap" is a Christian general fiction book. While the book was from a woman's point of view, the issues were mainly about parenting in general, so men might enjoy it as well.

The characters were varied, acted in realistic ways, and dealt with realistic issues. The suspense was created by relationship tensions, not knowing what happened to Tristan and some instances where Serena was in physical danger. The unique setting details brought the story alive in my imagination.

I did wonder why the detective didn't just check the phone records to see where the phone call came from. It would have cut several months off the search. However, it's a minor point.

The Christian element was woven into the story and flowed as a natural part of the story. There were some short conversations about God, but they didn't give "easy answers" to Serena's questions and didn't come across as sermons to the reader.

There were no sex scenes. There was a minor amount of fake bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this book.

The emotions were vividly expressive, even if the main character "sounded" a little hokey in some places. I enjoy this author and even more so in her partnership with Stephen Arterburn.

4.0 out of 5 stars Real World Parenting in the 21st century (in this case a parenting nightmare), July 7, 2007
This review is from: Tristan's Gap (Paperback)
This book is a good read, and a good lesson for parents who think they have done a "good job" with their teenage or young adult kids. Don't think your family is too perfect. See the mistakes this family makes and learn from them. One of the best books in this genre I've seen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Communication with your children, June 28, 2010
This review is from: Tristan's Gap (Paperback)
In the book, Tristan's Gap, the message was very pertinent in today's world for parents and teens alike. We try so hard to control and protect our children, that when a child is put into a life-changing decision, they can't make the decision for themselvs. Their own thought is "my dad will kill me if he finds out". We need to be open, and have open eyes with our children. Talk frankly about the today's pressures and issues on kids. Keep the family close, but let them make some simple choices and as they mature, choices that are wise and strong. Don't sufficate your children so they can't think rationally to make wise choices The facts are true about rights of children for abortions; too many freedoms of abortion choices for kids. We need to get more conservative about these laws. Nancy Rue is one of my favorite authors and is "right on" about issues that our children deal with. I gave it a 4 star because the writing was a bit simplistic, but maybe that's good as it was a quick read. I think her writings have improved in time as this book was copywritten in 2006. Appropriate for church libraries in the Youth section.
