2.0 out of 5 stars Food for thought.....
I was thoroughly disappointed by this book. I had hoped to have purchased a factual, and unbiased piece of non-fiction. And I soon found out that this book fulfils none of the above. After about 90 pages I got the opinion that the author was trying to persuade me to think that every Muslim was a gun-trotting fanatic ready to blow himself to pieces. His "free"...

I have been reading Morgan Norval's work for years, and find itconsistently stimulating and pertinent. Writing with the expertise of one who has actually been there, he always offers a penetrating look at conflict. Triumph of Disorder, his latest book, looks specifically at the discontents of the Islamic world and the threats arising therefrom. It is a superb job. Mr. Norval does not shrink from expressing strong views, and those accustomed to cautious academic writing may be startled. But even those who disagree with the ideas--and they are genuine ideas--presented in this book will find himself or herself spurred to think afresh and more deeply about a growing problem for which there is no end in sight. On the fundamental issues of motivation, violence and the logical illogic of human behavior, the author is unbeatable. Strongly recommended for the reader willing to take an intellectual step beyond the campus library and into the harsh realities of the world as it is. As a former soldier who has seen first-hand some of the challenges this book defines so ably, I found Triumph of Disorder, worth the price, worth the time, and worth sharing with friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm the publisher of this book, October 16, 2001

MRB "Writer" (Indian Wells, Ca. United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Triumph of Disorder: Islamic Fundamentalism, the New Face of War (Hardcover)
As Morgan's publisher, I'd like to comment on what I know of the author and his knowledge of this terribly important subject to Americans now. Know this: Morgan Norval is an expert on terrorism, and the threat to the United States and the West from Islamic terrorism. After his stint in the U.S. Marine Corps, Morgan spent over ten years fighting "hand to hand" in Africa against anti-west forces in that region. Morgan writes from a perspective that most "think-tank" experts do not have...he's killed...he's looked into the eyes of an enemy and slit his throat in a very quiet moment--just the two of them--man to man. Morgan Norval knows what this next war will be about, how it will be fought, and why we will win it. Those who post reviews who have not been in that world of terror have every right to express their opinion about the book...just know that they do not have the expertise that the author has...nor the knowledge.

After the attack on the U.S., our inventory of hardcover books was immediately wiped out. We are now bringing out a paperback edition of "Triumph of Disorder" through our imprint "McKenna Publishing Group" and look forward to Amazon.com selling it at a reduced price of $.... It has been updated with a new introduction by Morgan, and freshened a bit.....

4.0 out of 5 stars It's here & there and it's them & us, September 28, 2001

This review is from: Triumph of Disorder: Islamic Fundamentalism, the New Face of War (Hardcover)
Morgan Norval, executive director of a think tank on terrorism, writes about what he does for a living in contrast to academic blame-America-first people who extrapolate from their field of concentration to write on a subject they know nothing about. This is refreshing at the outset.

To wit, Norval confronts foursquare the irrationality of man and the way it renders useless any attempt to impose critical analysis on the true believers. In the instant case I'm thinking of Chomsky, Susan Sontag, and Michael Moore, all of whom in my opinion would be critical of Norval on this subject.

Norval's insistance on the depth and breadth of the Islamic threat to America is timely and realistic and everyone in the country needs to listen up. The problem of suicidal terrorists on U.S. soil needs to be handled with a continuing vigilance. Not since the war of 1812 has America been truly assaulted by an outsider. Hopefully Norval will continue to write about what is sure to be a long term conflict. In this sense this book is timely and a must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Provocative look at the future of conflict, December 14, 1999

This review is from: Triumph of Disorder: Islamic Fundamentalism, the New Face of War (Hardcover)
While many fine and thoughtful books have been written on the violent aspects of fundamentalist belief in the Islamic world, I found this the most provocative and challenging. Mr. Norval has done a first-rate job of thinking this problem through and marshalling his arguments. Even if the reader does not agree with some of his conclusions, the author always forces the reader to think afresh. Avoiding simplistic portrayals of the Islamic "threat," the author nonetheless captures the degree to which cultural separatism and fear of change inspires a disproportionate amount of international terrorism in the Islamic world--a mark of cultural inability to compete. For those seeking a deeper understanding of a very complex, but urgent problem, this book is well worth the price. Strongly recommended for those interested in terrorism, international affairs and cultural studies, from lay readers to military officers and diplomats.

This review is from: Triumph of Disorder: Islamic Fundamentalism, the New Face of War (Hardcover)
Isn't it interesting how an author can write a book which will then unfold on the pages of the newspaper. Norval saw it coming and predicted it. I say keep an eye on him and see what comes next.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wake up for the West, February 24, 2002
By A Customer
Mr. Norval's book is dialed right in in terms of the terrorist threats facing the world. I would recommend the reading of Pat Buchanan's "Death of the West" as a companion to this work. Althought poorly edited, "Triumph of Disorder" is incredibly prescient given 9/11. Western, Christian, capitalist society must prepare for the jihad. The fact remains, the population of the west is declining while the population of Osama, et al. is increasing. It is not racist to see the world in these terms. We, as Americans, must know what our history and heritage is. We do not want France or Germany to dominate us through the EU nor do we want to be subjigated to Moslem religious rule. We are a republican country guarenteed by the vote. Those politicians who spout political correctness and "tolerance" in the wake of terrorism are self serving whores. It is time for Americans to decide if they are citizens or subjects.

His "free" interpretations of some parts of the Koran or his explanation of what a jihad is are "interesting" to say the least. Also the author's attempts to create hypothetical cases of future terrorist threats are amusing at most. There are definitely better books on Islamic Fundamentalism, but there are also worse.

1.0 out of 5 stars OVERSIMPLIFICATION, October 16, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Triumph of Disorder: Islamic Fundamentalism, the New Face of War (Hardcover)
In the wake of the 11 September tragedies in New York and Washington, it is no surprise that Americans would want to know more about Islamic terrorism.
But it would be wrong to oversimplify a complex issue. This book is such an oversimplification. It draws heavily on two previous books: one is Anthony J. Dennis's " The Rise of the Islamic Empire and the threat to the West" which came out six years ago and the other is Amir Taheri's " Holy Terror: Inside the World of Islamic Terrorrism" which appeared 12 years ago.
Both those books offer a far deeper, and fairer, analysis of the phenomenon. They are also free of the obvious hatred that Norval has for all Arabs and Muslims. A READER IN ENGLAND

1.0 out of 5 stars open minded, October 4, 2001
This review is from: Triumph of Disorder: Islamic Fundamentalism, the New Face of War (Hardcover)
if you want to read a book that fuels your own stereotypical perceptions of people then this is the book for you. however, if you are open minded then give it a miss.

the author clearly has a deep rooted hatred for arabs and muslims in particular. for a start there is no such thing as muslim fundametalists, this is a term invented by the media. if a musil is a fundamentalist then he is not a muslim. secondlay islam is against any form of aggression and preaches religious tolerence. furthermore islam abolished slavery more than a thousand years ago and woman have equal rights.

there are plenty of books out there that speak the truth, while others simply jump on the media band-wagon and paint a picture of arabs as bearded. illiterate terrorists.
