A Fine Introduction,
By LME "The Discerning Viewer" (Central CA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Triumph and Terror: The French Revolution (Hardcover)
This is a well-written introduction to the French Revolution. The length is just right for high-schoolers, grades 10-12. The political background is presented without too much detail and the philosophical background is not belabored. The result is that the events and personages speak for themselves...when the results of their actions are presented. The center of the book is a little slow, or dry, as the events unfold, but overall it is a good read.I have read many books for this age range and found that many are entirely too philosophical for the young adult mind. Also, Many of the standard adult books on the French Revolution are very long and all-encompassing. I find them to be unwieldy for high school studies. I recommend Triumph and Terror for a thorough, balanced introduction. Another good, shorter tome is History In A Hurry: La French Revolution by British humorist John Farman. |
