Biography

Avishai Cohen is a leading figure on the international jazz scene and one of the most sought-after players of his generation — “an assertive and accomplished trumpeter with a taste for modernism,” according to Nate Chinen of The New York Times. Though deeply rooted in the bebop and post-bop tradition, Avishai is taking jazz in new directions, making waves as an improviser, ... Read more in Amazon's Avishai Cohen Store

Editorial Reviews

Trumpeter Avishai Cohen - voted a Rising Star in the 2012 DownBeat Critics Poll - has earned renown as a musician with an individual sound and a questing spirit, an ever-creative player-composer open to multiple strains of jazz and active internationally as a leader, co-leader and sideman. The New York Times described him as "an assertive, accomplished trumpeter with a taste for modernism." Avishai played a headlining set at the 2011 Newport Jazz Festival, leading his bold, thrilling trio Triveni with double-bassist Omer Avital and drummer Nasheet Waits. Anzic Records will release the trio's second album, Triveni II - Avishai's sixth recording as a leader - in October 2012.

Triveni II is a good jazz record. Is the second part of the session of 2007. He said" We recorded together in one room, without separation, without headphones , which allowed us to listen and react to one another in the most natural way". This is Triveni II, a natural and excellent CD. The sound of Avishai Cohen on trumpet is clear and technically perfect. Omer Avital on bass and the great Nasheet Watts on drums, are perfect. They play all kind of songs, from Cohen material to Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry or a incredible "Willow Weep for me"of Ann Ronell or a really beautiful "Woody¨n¨You" from the master Dizzy Gillespie. The second parts could be better that the first one. This is a example. Good jazz, good musician and a natural a perfect session. Exellent CD

i bought this CD as a result of a review in a magazine. Since I am a wanna-be trumpet player, I listen with a technical as well as musical ear. I was favorably impressed on both counts. I find it amazing that the group manages to sustain a strong harmonic base even without a keyboard or chordal instrument. Mr. Cohen's mastery of the technical aspects of the trumpet are remarkable and remind us that talent and skill reside all over the planet. I would say that this music demands conscious listening and would be distracting as background for other activities, a fact with which my wife can enthusiastically agree.

They used to have a saying to describe certain things; it was like the 'curate's egg'. 'Good in parts.
So it is, with this CD. There are some tracks I really enjoy. Others not so much.
Would I buy another CD by the same artist?
Perhaps! It would depend on the tracks.

It's Sunday Afternoon, and I have Trevini 2 on in the background. It actually IS a pretty good CD and it is growing on me.
I didn't know a trumpet could sound so sexy. It can!

This is the classic jazz acoustic trio. But it takes particular courage and ability to pull it off with trumpet, bass, and drums, since there is no chordal instrument, such as guitar, organ, or piano. Mr. Cohen, however, rises to the occasion, playing standards and originals in fine form.

This is straight jazz with no frills or fakery. As such, it is beautiful. Cohen's tone is sure, rich, and round. His note choices are smart and his execution is sharp and satisfying. He is strongly supported by his band mates, who know how to comp and solo with style.

Bravo!
