4.0 out of 5 stars Faulty DVD
My husband and I played this game for the first time this week. We had a couple of problems with the DVD - on some of the questions it seemed to not give enough time to even read the question before the answer was given and at other times - the answer was NEVER given - just popped back to the main screen. I do think the game is a great idea/concept - but the DVD...

My firends and I are EXTREMELY disappointed with this game. The DVD is basically useless. If Hasbro would have been willing to pay some royalties they could have used actual movie and video clips which would have made this game fun. Instead they use horrible graphics with still photos or Scrabble type words to get you to guess the answer. Meanwhile they flash the answer too quickly for any kind of team play and you cannot pause the DVD at all.

If you still want to buy this, I will sell you mine since I will not be using it again.

The game itself is pretty fun, but the DVD has some problems. We played the game twice and ended up with the same questions popping up on the dvd within the same game. There is only one box of cards to play with and we repeated on these also. Needs more variety, more cards, and a better system with the DVD. The concept is good, just needs some work. I'll stick with Genus IV or 20th Anniversary Edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trivial Pursuit POP Culture better than reviews, February 9, 2004

What a great game. We played until 3am, and just had a ball. There were so many film clips, and hilarious commercials, and sports clips and puzzles. Just a great great game.

We had a problem when we tried to use the game on the cheap $89 DVD player we got at WalMart. The questions started to repeat. But when we played it on our Sony DVD player it was a blast. No problems at all. The company says that some of the lower-end DVD players may have some problems...but I can tell you for sure that it works on a better player. So the reviews here are either from people with really cheap DVD players...or from the makers of competitive games...because they sure aren't accurate.

The art and the music and the way the questions are presented are really first rate. Very clever puzzles.

Trivial Pursuit DVD Pop Culture is way better than Scene It (we have both). It has a really varied collection of videos and still pictures. By comparison Scene It is sort of dull. Nice movie clips....but that's about it.

Trivial Pursuit DVD is by far the best game we have played in a long time. A thoroughly unique blast! GREAT GAME.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the 20th Anniversary edition, January 12, 2004

I am a big Trivial Pursuit fan and a DVD fanatic, so I was very excited for the DVD game.

The questions were alright. They were better written, for the most part, than the 20th Anniversary edition.

The playing pieces are fun: a cell phone, a mix tape, an Atari joystick and a lava lamp. The wedge holders are neat too.

HOWEVER, the DVD did not impress me. I expected video clips, sound bites, etc. etc. The DVD showed an average of *one* video clip per every game played. Most of the questions, which I need to remind you are "for a wedge," are really easy and the answers are given away by things like Scrabble pieces or a crossword puzzle bringing together really easy clues or unscrambling a name.

The fun aspect of the DVD is that all players with that color wedge get a shot at getting the wedge. Also, folks with the color wedge get it taken away if they shout out the answer (and they usually do!).

I was dissappointed by the DVD aspect. Get the 20th Anniversary edition for the neat card dispenser. Wait on the next DVD edition with a more interactive DVD.

They didn't go as far as they could have with the DVD format. I do realize that they had to fit a lot of material on one DVD, but two or three DVDs worth of questions with more video and audio would have been worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars great fun, April 10, 2004

I got this game for christmas and we played it that night with a large group of people in 2 teams. We had a blast my kids could answer questions and my grandma could, so it was great in a large group.
The reviews I read here are right. The dvd pie question are quite easy in the way that they ask some questions, some are a challenge though. But, it was fun that everyone could yell things out. However, there are some dvd question that ask a date and everyone is yelling 1984, 1985, until the time is up. That isn't a challenge it is just a guess.
We have played it several time in groups. A few dvd questions pop up that we already had so we just had the team do another question.
The questions at the end seemed really hard to us we couldn't get the answers( with any group we played )quickly so the game lasted forever because you have to keep moving out and landing exactly in the middle. But after a while we just let the people jump from pie to pie and the other one stay in the center so we could end the game quicker. It takes a good hour and half to play. But, even though there are things we don't like, we really do love this game. We have had fun and laughs every time we played! Hope you have fun

1.0 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment, October 18, 2004

This game is really lame. We couldn't even use the DVD because after the first question in each category, it just kept repeating the same questions. So we just played it the old-fashioned way, using the cards. But why pay extra for the DVD edition, then? (Someone said that if you're playing on a cheaper DVD player, that might happen. But I don't think I should have to go out and buy a new DVD player just to play this game.)

Not only that, but the questions we did get to see on the DVD weren't all that great. At least a couple of them were just questions, no video clips, no musical hints, nothing that would require them to be on a DVD as opposed to on a card. For example, "What two words make up the word modem?" and "What musical instrument does Lucy Liu play?" I expected to see things on the DVD that you wouldn't get in the regular version.

Very disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun for those who were of at least the 80's., December 31, 2003

2-4 individual players or teams can compete to answer questions of the following categories: Buzz, Movies, TV, Sports & Games, Music, & Fads. Answering a question successully earns a player or team color coded tile that corresponds with that category.

Once a player or team collects tiles from all 6 categories, they move towards the center hub and answer the game winning question.

Where the DVD comes into play is when you land on either the game winning hub space, or one of the 6 color coded spaces at the end of a spoke. Using your DVD remote, you select the corresponding category and wait for a random clue to play. It could be a picture, a scramble puzzle, a movie/music/tv clip, etc. Actually I was pretty impressed with the presentation of the clues and randomness of the whole thing, though the category introductions do get repetitive after a while.

The 4 player pieces that come with the game are pretty durable, and the board itself is very heavy laminated stcok that fold into fours.

I thought the categories were pretty well thought out and stayed on topic. While some questions are painfully easy, others are pretty ridiculousy obscure that only a person who memorized an encylopedia set or was an idiot savant would be able to answer some of the questions. With that being said, I find it highly unlikely most 8 years old (recommended age) would find this game very exciting or fair.

It appeared to me and my wife that you had to be at least a teenager in the 80's to appreciate some of the questions and clips, otherwise anyone younger probably could not relate.

Not sure how 'educational' this game is. I'd re-classify it as 'nostaligic' trivia if anything.

As far as fun factor goes: it is defintely geared towards teams, or at least 3 single players.

Lastly, there is some strategy involved. When you move your pieces around the board, there is some thinking involved on how to position your piece to have a higher chance to land on certain categories your good at, or ones that you need to move on.

We bought this game last weekend and really enjoyed it. Yes, it's true that you don't use the dvd so much, only to answer questions when you are on a "pie square". And I do agree with the one reviewer, you have to beware, the dvd questions are timed, you need to be quick. So most of the questions do come from the cards. However, I found most of the questions much easier than the 20th anniversary. However, you have to be a person who knows & enjoys music, tv, movies & fads. I enjoy those types of things though and enjoyed the game! Besides, if you love the dvd, it's not like you can't decide to use it in place of the cards, I think that would work just as well.

We thought it would be fun and a nice change to the game to have the questions on DVD. From the description on the box, you get the idea that all the questions come from the DVD, but they do not. The DVD is used to win a piece for each category and to win the game. The rest of the questions are still on cards like all the other games. Just disappointed that it wasn't what we expected.

The questions are good, not as difficult as some versions. Which may be more fun for those people who are not die hard trivia people that don't enjoy the most obscure questions. The tokens are nice and unusual.

So if you are a more general knowledge person or not a hard core trivia you may like this game. I would give it a higher rating, except it bills itself to be an interactive DVD game and that is just a small part of it and gets to be a bit tedious after a while.
