Rivetting, organic organ minimalism,
By Rinchen Choesang "Empty Seeker" (Melbourne, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Trivium (Audio CD)
This CD is an absolute gem and a must in any collection of contemporary organ music. Every minimalist fan, 'classical' or otherwise, should also have a copy in their collection. The four Part pieces are worth the value of the CD alone. The second track 'Mein Weg Hat Gipfel Und Wellentaler', with its gentle floating rhythm is the standout on the album. The Maxwell Davies pieces are short and very quirky - little musical puzzles. The Glass pieces are vintage Glass, driven and mesmerising in their joyful minimalism. A must buy CD!!! Purchase and enjoy.

not a "must buy" for most people,

This review is from: Arvo Pärt, Peter Maxwell Davies, Philip Glass: Trivium (Audio CD)
I don't share the first review's opinion that this is a must-buy - unless you're a big fan of organ music, or minimalism, or both, and in those cases you won't need a review to inform your purchase.I would recommend this to someone who is curious about 20th century organ music, but even in that case Hindemith might be my first recommendation. If you're just curious about minimalism, this isn't even among the top five albums to get first; I'd say if you haven't heard Steve Reich: Music for 18 Musicians at least then you should just put this on your wish list for later and try that one first. But this is definitely a nice CD to listen to. The music is creative and interesting, the organ is lovely and powerful. Most of the music is quiet, atmospheric, with interesting harmonies (ECM's stereotypical style); there are moments of a little more violence, and surprisingly long periods of tension. In the end, though, everything is the beauty we expect from these composers. If you're on the fence about this, try Part's Annum Per Annum. Google it and you'll find recordings you can listen to for free, and if you want more music like that, then this goes in your cart. |
