When American diplomat Sylvester Mercedes flew into Ankara, Turkey on what was supposed to be a normal business trip, he mysteriously vanishes from his hotel room. With her husband now missing for more than two weeks, prominent socialite Lois Mercedes hires P.I. Frank Johnson to track him down. Frank had spent some of his Army MP days in Ankara 14 years ago, and while he's not at all happy about going back, being nearly broke can be a powerful motivator. But after getting mugged and finding a murder at the same hotel, Frank manages to track the clues to the kidnapping down into the troglodytes' subterranean cities in Cappadocia. And that's when things really get interesting! Frank hates dark, low places, but he can't afford not to go down the maze of tunnels, if he's to close out the case, and collect his paycheck -- and return home alive!

Ed Lynskey is a crime fiction writer residing not too far from the Pentagon. Great hard-boiled mystery,

n trouble with the IRS, Frank Johnson takes a missing person case that sends him to Ankara, Turkey. There, in a low-budget hotel, he looks into the life of the missing American. From the bright red bra Johnson finds in the missing man, Sylvester Mercedes's, room, Johnson doubts the wife is really worried enough to send him all the way from Virginia. But what could have happened? Although everyone seems willing to believe Sylvester simply decided to take a walk, Johnson doesn't believe it. Still, his list of possible suspects is unconvincing and, without a body, the Turkish police have other things on their mind--especially when a beautiful dead body shows up at the hotel where Johnson is staying.
The longer he spends on the case, the less Johnson likes it. Still, the IRS is waiting for him back home, so he continues digging. Sylvester had an argument with the beer salesman. There's no love lost between him and the hotel manager. The local US embassy is keeping their mouth shut about whether Sylvester might have been involved in spying. Then there's the hotel manager's sexy wife...and big pistol. Author Ed Lynskey gives us a classic hardboiled detective in the ever-troubled but somehow noble Frank Johnson. Johnson uses his fists as much as his brain, rubs just about everyone the wrong way, has little luck with women, but keeps doggedly after the truth even when it would be easier for him to give up and go away. Lynskey's writing is classic hard-boiled as well, with gloomy descriptions, an unfriendly world, and populated with characters who simply can't be trusted. Fans of hard-boiled mysteries will definitely want to grab TROGLODYTES.

Diplomat Sylvester Mercedes has come up missing in Turkey and his wife wants to know why. Our favorite character, P.I. Frank Johnson, reluctantly agrees to take on the job. His last adventures in Turkey didn't leave him with a good taste in his mouth, but right now he needed the money, and the money was good.
As he digs deeper and deeper into Sylvester's mysterious disappearance he is taken to the tunnels in the ancient troglodytes subterranean cities and his very life is once again on the line. Hold on to your hat readers you're in for quite a ride! I have read several of our gifted author, Ed Lynskey's P.I. Johnson mysteries and have yet to be disappointed. He hits the mark again in this one whirling you around in a maze of adventure, colored by interesting people, leaving you wondering just who is good and who is evil. The story definitely has all the elements of a true mystery, leaving clues and making your mind struggle to figure it out before you reach that part in the book. The local just adds some sweet icing to the read and sparks interest with the flavor of people and places it brings. The pacing is good, not too fast, yet not lagging and as always P.I. Johnson leaves you with a giggle and waiting for his next adventure. Another winner, well worth your time. Well done.
