Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 2-5-This Cajun rendering of the "Three Little Pigs" has the same strengths and weaknesses of this duo's Cendrillon (1998) and Jolie Blonde and the Three H berts (1999, both Pelican). Collins writes a lively tale, but inserts so many Cajun phrases that uninitiated readers may lose the story's thread. She also reverses the order of the trois cochons, introducing `Ti Joe (petite Joe) first and calling him the "first little pig" even though he is the one who later builds the sturdiest house, which is a little confusing. Of course, in Cajun country, houses are built of sugarcane, rice stalks, and oyster shells mixed with mud. Collins is true to the original story and includes `Ti Joe's three duels of wit with the wolf, complete with the villain's eventual demise by way of the pig's new crawfish boiling pot. Phrases are translated at the bottom of each page. There is a recipe at the end for "Grillades and Grits," a good Cajun breakfast using "beef or pork (wolf is acceptable)." Soper's illustrations use color beautifully and provide humorously appropriate depictions of the brothers and their adventures. This is not an essential title, but it is good fun, well illustrated, and informative of Cajun French.-Judith Constantinides, formerly at East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA

From the Inside Flap

"Children will howl with laughter as les trois cochons (three little pigs) outwit the wily loup-garou (wolf) in this Cajun twist to the classic tale." -LACajunStuff.com Near Big Mamou in Southwest Louisiana, Mamère Cochon must send her three little pigs, 'Ti Joe, 'Ti Claude, and 'Ti Frère, out into the great big world to seek their fortunes. As they prepare to go their separate ways, the brothers agree to watch out for the loup-garou, who's been planning a cochon du lait for as long as they can remember. How would the brothers make out on their own? Well, as 'Ti Joe always says, "Vouloir c'est pouvoir" (where there's a will, there's a way). But will they be able to avoid the hungry loup-garou? Well, if any three pigs ever had le savoir-faire (the know-how) to outwit the cunning wolf, their names would have to be 'Ti Joe, 'Ti Claude, and 'Ti Frère, I garontee! As a little lagniappe (something extra), the author has included 'Ti Joe's special recipe for Grillades and Grits, the classic breakfast dish. Bon appétit! Sheila Hébert-Collins, a native of Abbeville, Louisiana, has enormous pride in her Cajun heritage. Listed on the Louisiana State Artist Roster as an author and Cajun storyteller, she often makes appearances in schools throughout the state. Her other books are 'T Pousette et 'T Poulette: A Cajun Hansel and Gretel, Cendrillon: A Cajun Cinderella, Jolie Blonde and the Three Héberts: A Cajun Twist to an Old Tale, Blanchette et les Sept Petits Cajuns: A Cajun Snow White, Petite Rouge: A Cajun Twist to an Old Tale, Jean Paul Hébert Was There/Jean-Paul Hébert Etait Là, and Jacques et la Canne à Sucre: A Cajun Jack and the Beanstalk, all published by Pelican. The lush surroundings of his Lafeyette, Louisiana, home and studio often influence the work of award-winning illustrator Patrick Soper. He has also illustrated several of Sheila Hébert-Collins' titles and Cajun Folktales, Contes Populaires Cadiens, Mardi Gras in the Country, and A Christmas Dictionary, all published by Pelican.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hysterical, April 10, 2006
This review is from: Les Trois Cochons (Hardcover)
This book is absolutely hilarious. I laughed until I cried it is so funny. This is, without a doubt, one of my favorites. It is a precious book. It is not hard to understand especially if you are from Lafayette or the surrounding areas. Many of the words used are common in the broken "frenglish" that we speak on a daily basis. I also actually learned a few words and read words that I had not heard in years, or remember my grandparents using, but never knew what they were saying. I 100% recommend this book for kids from 1-92. :) An adult would love this book as much as a child could. 10 STARS!!!!

This book is a lot of fun! Maybe you have to be familiar with the Cajun culture to appreciate it, but I think it is a great read and a fun gift for anyone. Also check out the Cajun Night Before Christmas.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a horror!, May 22, 2007
This review is from: Les Trois Cochons (Hardcover)
This book is DREADFUL. My husband, son and I are a French-English Bilingual family. It is not worth being read aloud to our son even once!!! We returned it almost as soon as it arrived. Don't bother if you're looking for an authentic depiction of the French language. This mix of French/English (franglais) is exactly what we are trying to teach our son NOT to do! Find another French read instead!
