Creative Reggae, Rocksteady, and Ska, November 19, 2005
This review is from: Trojan Box Set: Mod Reggae, Vol. 2 (Audio CD)
I picked up this album about 2 weeks ago and have not stop listening to it since. I am usually a roots reggae guy through and through, but this album has opened my eyes to ska and reggae acts I have either ignored or not listened hard enough to. My standout tracks include "Ghost Chicken" by The Music Doctors, "Don the Lion" by Don "Cosmic" Drummond, and another track listed as "Song For My Father" by Ronald Alphonso.

Not bad music, but you sort of wonder why???, January 18, 2008
This review is from: Trojan Box Set: Mod Reggae, Vol. 2 (Audio CD)
Although I feel the some of the music on this set is decent...great even, I feel it is superfluous and is not an acceptable follow-up to
Trojan Box Set: Mod Reggae. Sure plenty of mods have probably listened to these songs, but unlike the first volume, these songs were not selected with the mod movement in mind...just happened to be some ska/rocksteady that was heard around that time period.
While there are some amazing tracks like "Splash Down" by the Crystalites, "River To The Bank" by Derrick Morgan, and "Get Up Edina" by Desmond Dekker, they can be found elsewhere. But then you have horrid tracks like "Ghost Chicken" by Music Doctor, which is just weird. Again, it's very hard to truly settle into this collection because of the filler tracks.
This boxset is good for ska aficionados or anyone into older Jamaican music. In that way, it's a decent buy. But if you are looking for some definitive reggae tracks that will make you long to hop on the good old Vespa, I doubt this set will do that. At best, you can play it early in the party when your still preparing your olives for your martinis.
