This review is from: Trojan SC-744 Portable Saw Stand (For DeWalt DW744) (Tools & Home Improvement)
This portable table stand make it easy to setup my saw for work, and then stow it away when I am finished. The fit-and-finish of the product is decent. The overall design is okay -- it does the job reasonably well. As advertised, the 36" table height puts the saw at a comfortable height. There were a few things that annoyed me when I first got the stand: 1) The entire weight of the saw pivots on the wheels. I find the heaviness a bit unwiedly as I tilt the stand for transport and for setup. I think the wheels should have been placed a little "higher" to better balance the weight while pivoting. 2) One of the legs don't slide in/out smoothly from its mounting hole. 3) I have to attach small rubber bumpers to the table to protect the table from the ground during storage and transport. (The bumpers come included with the stand.) I would have liked a better scheme to protect the right side of the saw table (when the stand/saw is tilted onto the ground). I've gotten used to these, however, and they don't bother me any more. The set-screws to hold the legs are spring-loaded -- a nice touch. The handle (to the left of the saw) extends and snaps into a locked position. (You can't tell that from the product picture.) The setup is very easy. I spent about 15 minutes putting everything together using basic tools (two wrenches, and a hammer for the wheel axel nuts.)

About three months ago, I added the Trojan SC-744 Portable Saw Stand and the DeWalt DW7441 Side and Outfeed Support to my Dewalt 744 saw. Since then, I've come to appreciate more the usefulness of my upgraded saw.The cart (and the DW7441 supports) make it really easy to work anywhere. At the peak of the summer heat, I installed a window air conditioner in the kitchen window. The window is over-sized, so I had to make a special frame to fit the airconditioner. With the saw on the portable stand, I just rolled the equipment up onto the back patio, and set up for work right next to the window. There, I ripped my boards and plywood to size using the outfeed/side supports. The saw stand legs provided enough stability to work with large pieces using the outfeed/side supports. Having the saw right next to my work, and at a comfortable height was really nice. When I finished, I returned the saw to the garage quickly and with ease. Without the stand, I would have either worked with the saw on the ground; or, I would have schlepped a worktable to the patio and secured the saw to the table. I almost gave the stand four stars... So, why do I still only give three stars to this stand? I continue to have occasional problems with the weight distribution of the saw -- raising/lowering the saw is a bit cumbersome, and I've twice banged the full weight of the saw against my foot. Let me emphasize that the problem happens when I am setting the saw to the working position. The stand is very stable and safe when I am using it.

I have not seen DeWalt's stand, but remember it seemed a little pricey for a fixed base, especially after having dropped so much cash into the saw. It seems you could buy a cheaper base and adapt it easy enough, which is probably the way to go if you have little need to move your table saw much. If you work out of your garage like me though, and store the saw after use, the wheels save lots of effort. The DeWalt saw is great, but heavier alone than my skil table saw was with its base, and also larger in girth, so it is hard to move around. For me, the wheels on this unit, while disappointing, are the way to go. I say disappointing because the blue bar that you see going just behind the wheel in the picture has very little clearance from the ground, so that when wheeling it over any kind of hump the bar on each side scrapes. Poor design, and although the unit is strong enough, it appears put have been put together in someone's garage. A real company could have the thing made in China for 1/3 of the price. But since its the only thing out there, it's the way to go. Don't be dumb like me and buy the saw without getting this or some other stand at the same time. The thing does not work well on the ground!

faulty handle pins,
This review is from: Trojan SC-744 Portable Saw Stand (For DeWalt DW744) (Tools & Home Improvement)
Assembly was easy but the spring-loaded anchoring pins that pop into the holes in the sleeves of the handle support were faulty. This is a dangerous flaw as the security of the handle in maneuvering the saw is essential. I have to attempt to file the inside "chads"(!) of the holes to allow the pins to more fully penetrate the hole and be secure. Otherwise seems fine.

The best bet for a DeWalt 744,

As soon as I saw a picture of the SC-744, I knew it was exactly what I needed - my shop is essentially an 8x16 tool shed. I received the stand a little before Christmas and had it unpacked and attached to the saw in about 10 minutes. I found the stand to be a well-considered design, very well made and quite stable when upright or on the wheels - when I paid attention to the principles of leverage. Everything fit together right out of the box except for the second set of legs that I tried. They didn't slide smoothly into their sockets, as did the first. A quick swap of leg sets front-to-back and they slipped right in. In the last six weeks, the SC-744 has allowed me to move my saw from the shop to the back patio and to the carport with no trouble at all. Even up, over and down the 3 steps from the shop door to the carport was no problem. If you need to make a "portable" DeWalt 744 truly "mobile", this stand would be your best choice. |
