Book Description

In Troll Or Derby, fifteen-year-old Roller Deb is singled out by town bullies for both her skates, and for being different. When her popular homecoming queen of a sister is kidnapped by a scuzzy drug dealer, Deb must flee the trailer park in which she's grown up, and rescue her. Along the way, Deb becomes enmeshed in the magical realm of trolls and fairies, and the blood-thirsty version of roller derby at which these beings excel. But spending too much time among the fairies comes with a price. Will Deb choose to save her sister, with the aid of a mysterious troll? Or will she be lost to the lures of roller derby, and this magical new realm, forever?

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is a dark fairy tale about a fairy and a troll who fight the only way they know how...with Rock 'n' Roll and Roller Derby. It's packed with bikers, gangsters, drug dealers, amish and a whole bunch of other worldly creatures.   I'm pretty sure your parents won't want you reading this book. Read it anyway.   (★★★★★)" ~Ian Seta, Floating Leaves Book Review/IndieBookshelf.com

"Red Tash delivers again with this tale of rockin', rollin' and full metal fantasy! I love this damn book." ~Axel Howerton, author of Living Dead at Zigfreidt & Roy

"You'll quickly become engrossed by Deb and Harlow's story. Once you start, it's hard to put Troll Or Derby down. At 262 pages in the paperback edition, it's the perfect length for an afternoon of summer reading. If you're down for roller derby, fantasy, action, and a cast of completely insane characters (in a good way), you should definitely read Troll Or Derby." ~Captain Painway, LikeItDerby.com

"This book has it all. Prophecies. Destinies. Royalty, trust, revenge. Sex, drugs, and rock and roll are doused in humor and lit ablaze with quirky snark. I blew through this book incredibly fast because I couldn't put it down. If you want a solid, fun read, then pick up Red Tash's Troll or Derby." ~Mercedes Yardley, Shock Totem

From the Inside Flap

Debra Wheeler seems like any other high school reject: at fifteen, she's more into roller skating than boys, and Mom plays favorites with big sister Gennifer, the homecoming princess. With little to love in ultra-rural Bedrock, Indiana, Deb's counting down the daysuntil she can skate away to join the roller derby.

When Gennifer is kidnapped, Mom's breakdown forces Deb to take charge. With no clue where to start and thugs on her tail, she turns to the only adult who has ever helped her out in a jam: Coach, the owner of the skating rink. So what if he has tusks and might be a troll? Coach gives her a pair of magical skates and sends her off into a world that reveals a magical, if somewhat sinister, nature. Deb soon discovers that beneath the "glamours" of everyday life flit a million fantastical stories--and her own might be the juiciest gossip in town.

The Midwestern lifestyle every teenager loves to hate is turned inside out as Deb careens through Rumspringa, biker gangs, flea markets and tractor pulls--all teeming with fae. The valiant troll Harlow tries to intervene before Deb strays from her mission into romance and roller derby, but will they join forces to save Gennifer, or be lost to this strange new realm, forever?

Readers will find Deb a smart and witty narrator who--like them--says the wrong thing, wishes she could be someone else, and falls for the wrong person. They'll be drawn in by a girl who is independent and street smart, and they'll fall for her destined BFF, the whimsical troll loner who guides them through this quirky dark fantasy romp.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book Worth Rereading September 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
For a few weeks prior to my purchase I had heard praises sung for this book. A Labor Day sale slashed the price down to 99 cents and I asked myself what do I have to lose? However, it was more accurately what do I have to gain? A tale woven perfectly between two main characters; Roller Deb and Harlow. Before I get ahead of myself I was a little hesitant reading a book centered around Roller Derby even if there were trolls abound. Girls in cool clothes skating around a rink to cool music can only carry a plot for so long, right? Wrong.

Deb saves her sister in what is assumedly a meth fire. Wrong again. There are fairies too...and faeth(their drug of choice) is a bit more potent. When she is stolen from the hospital by Dave it sets everything into motion. Troll or Derby is very fast-paced, witty, comical, and even heartfelt in places. Be ready to encounter glamours, mansas, enchanted skates, rock n roll, unicorns, fairies, pixies, trolls, and one hell of a read. It seems to be leading to a sequel, and I hope that is the case. I've already recommended this book to a few people because it a fresh, unique, and enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Original and Entertaining! August 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I would like to start this review by stating that I'm also an author. I do this not for promotion, but to illustrate how much I love "Troll or Derby." When JK Rowling came out with the "Harry Potter" series, I was angry at myself. Why didn't *I* think of that?! This is the exact feeling I had while reading Red Tash's "Troll or Derby." I wish I'd had this idea. I also wish I was the main character, Roller Deb.

Red Tash created a world unlike any other. It seems as real as the world in which I live every day, even though it is a strong urban fantasy. Obviously, there are no trolls or fairies in my world, but if (in some True Blood-esque revelation) that world suddenly came to light, with all of the details in Tash's descriptions and dialogue, I'd buy it. And then I'd be jealous that I was just a lame old "English."

The story is rockemsockem. Having read "This Brilliant Darkness" by Red Tash, I was already familiar with her writing style, but she has really improved in this second novel. It was a lot easier to get into her rhythm this time around, and it was never stagnant. I was constantly rocked by rad events or details. Keeping a chick's teeth in a sack around your neck is truly the best way to make her your wife.

I have already recommended this book to people, and I will continue to do so. It is obvious that Red Tash has a long and awesome career ahead of her. I will look forward to every new work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not your typical fantasy novel July 14, 2012
By Scott
Format:Kindle Edition
Red Tash has taken some fairly standard character types (trolls, fairies, etc...) and done some pretty new crazy stuff with them. When a young woman's shallow sister goes missing she begins to find things out about herself she never would have guessed. Her (adopted) mother is screaming at her about how it is her job to protect her sister since that was the deal. Deb, the young woman, begins a hunt for her sister that will unmask some strange realities in her world including the truth about her past.

The chapters in this book switch viewpoints from Deb to Harlow, her troll protector. There were a few times where the time change that accompanied a view change took some time to reorient, but other than that it was a very useful tool enabling the reader to get a much broader view of the story. The story's strength is in it's originality, the characters are great, the scenes well done, and the pacing is nearly perfect but having trolls and fairies living among us, participating in roller derby really set this book apart for me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Where's the sweet Fairy on the cover???
Loved the cover ... great graphic. Cute little Fairy, so sweet. Inside, not so much. Blood thirsty, mean spirited ... Evil creatures. And not a heck of a lot of skating.

3.0 out of 5 stars An okay read
Definitely a younger audience. The story bounced from one point of view to another. The author had some good descriptive moments, but some of them took away from the main story. Read more
