Book Description

February 24, 1999 0810834650 978-0810834651 First Edition
The trombone has frequently been relegated to the status of footnotes and afterthoughts in much of the research on brass instruments. This book is designed to feature the trombone, its history, music, performers, performance practices (including jazz performance), instruments and equipment, and pedagogical topics that are of concern to those who teach the instrument.

The book may be used by trombonists and the broader research community who are interested in finding material both common and arcane about the trombone. The information may be perused at three levels: browsing through the broad classifications of each chapter; checking for cross-listings in the annotations; and using the index which is keyed to the author, subject, and keyword line at the end of each annotation. The book also includes four appendixes: the first identifies relevant periodicals and journals; the second lists obituaries of trombonists not included in biographical citations; the third lists presidents of the International Trombone Association; the fourth lists recipients of the ITA Award.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr. Lane's bibliography is a most comprehensive collection., July 13, 1999

This review is from: The Trombone: An Annotated Bibliography (Hardcover)
G.B. Lane has brought us yet another fine, monumental research product. I was able to put this resource to good use the first day it arrived. If you are not familiar with annotated bibliographies this one is perfect for your indoctrination. Not only because its focus is limited to the trombone, but because clear instructions on how to use the book are given in the preface along with search examples, a feature rarely found in scholarly publications. Lane intends his book for all trombonists, not just researchers. He has listed every descriptive source he could find on all aspects of our instrument. The annotations are concise yet packed with important details and the cross-references display remarkable investigative depth and organization. At 1305 entries, Dr. Lane's bibliography is the most comprehensive collection of "leg-work" our instrument has seen. In the book's forward Thomas Everett describes this work as a "Herculean labor of love." How right he is, for research of this magnitude is not accomplished within any space short of a lifetime. Thanks for providing us with such an enormous and thoughtful service, Dr. Lane.

Beware of the writings of G. B. Lane. Before you blindly add his information to your own papers, confirm his research. Mr. Lane's first book, "The Trombone in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance," was withdrawn by the publisher after allegations of plagiarism. For more information, read the review in the Music Library Association journal, Notes (vol. 41, no. 1, September 1984).
