5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!, November 7, 2007
This video series (6 vignettes) is, in a word, amazing. Marcus Buckingham ("First, Break All the Rules") talks about strengths and weaknesses in a very new way. All the while, an unspoken and unnarrated story of a boy and a trombone goes on in parallel. As a corporate trainer, I'm skeptical about this stuff, and find most business videos overpriced, poorly acted, and not well-thought-out. Not so here, as Buckinham's message is clear, relevant, and very useful. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Watch this with your whole family!, February 17, 2007

This review is from: Trombone Player Wanted (DVD)
Buckingham defines a strength as "anything you do that makes you feel stronger." It's not just "being good" at something!' This series is an excellent starting place for evaluating how you do life, and how you coach/manage others to do their lives!

I've enjoyed Buckinham's writing- but he is an amazingly engaging speaker as well. The Production of these short films is great. The online-content that goes along with it helps you to get even more out of it. Watch this first--> then read Marcus's books. There is an excellent sub-narrative that is played out as Marcus is talking. This really helped me talk with my son about the content.

As I was watching the Trombone Players Wanted DVD series, Ian (my 8 year old little guy) walked up and sat on my lap. He focused on the clip for 14 minutes, and when it was over he asked if he could watch the whole thing. Adrienne walked in to tell him it was bedtime, and Ian proceeded to summarize the clip. He said:

"Mom, this dvd is about how you guys tell me to work hardest at the things I'm good at and to not give up. It's about how it's okay that I'm not very good in writing and music class, as long as I make sure to do my best at getting better at things I'm good at, like reading and speaking."

He saw the correllation between how we are trying to parent (we recently got report cards) and what Buckingham is coaching people to do in their lives.

Adrienne let him stay up and watch more segments. We are going to re-watch the whole deal with Mommy and Kathleen on Monday. We spend so much time being ashamed and/or covering up our weaknesses that we ignore developing our strengths. I'm so glad Ian get's to start out by feeling good about his strenghts

5.0 out of 5 stars It's A Mindset..., February 10, 2007
This review is from: Trombone Player Wanted (DVD)
If you really listed to Marcus and are open to looking at another approach to how you do what you do, you'll make the connection. I have showed Disk 1 to six people and every single one of them was eager to learn more. So...what about you? I assure you, the time will fly just by as you engage in this DVD series.

My only wish is that all 6 parts were on one DVD. Each is 10-15 minutes and they all could have fit on 1 disk. I guess a walk to the DVD player to change the DVD is a good thing!?!?
