Wow!,
This review is from: Trombone Player Wanted (DVD)
This video series (6 vignettes) is, in a word, amazing. Marcus Buckingham ("First, Break All the Rules") talks about strengths and weaknesses in a very new way. All the while, an unspoken and unnarrated story of a boy and a trombone goes on in parallel. As a corporate trainer, I'm skeptical about this stuff, and find most business videos overpriced, poorly acted, and not well-thought-out. Not so here, as Buckinham's message is clear, relevant, and very useful. Highly recommended.

Buckingham defines a strength as "anything you do that makes you feel stronger." It's not just "being good" at something!' This series is an excellent starting place for evaluating how you do life, and how you coach/manage others to do their lives!
I've enjoyed Buckinham's writing- but he is an amazingly engaging speaker as well. The Production of these short films is great. The online-content that goes along with it helps you to get even more out of it. Watch this first--> then read Marcus's books. There is an excellent sub-narrative that is played out as Marcus is talking. This really helped me talk with my son about the content. As I was watching the Trombone Players Wanted DVD series, Ian (my 8 year old little guy) walked up and sat on my lap. He focused on the clip for 14 minutes, and when it was over he asked if he could watch the whole thing. Adrienne walked in to tell him it was bedtime, and Ian proceeded to summarize the clip. He said: "Mom, this dvd is about how you guys tell me to work hardest at the things I'm good at and to not give up. It's about how it's okay that I'm not very good in writing and music class, as long as I make sure to do my best at getting better at things I'm good at, like reading and speaking." He saw the correllation between how we are trying to parent (we recently got report cards) and what Buckingham is coaching people to do in their lives. Adrienne let him stay up and watch more segments. We are going to re-watch the whole deal with Mommy and Kathleen on Monday. We spend so much time being ashamed and/or covering up our weaknesses that we ignore developing our strengths. I'm so glad Ian get's to start out by feeling good about his strenghts

If you really listed to Marcus and are open to looking at another approach to how you do what you do, you'll make the connection. I have showed Disk 1 to six people and every single one of them was eager to learn more. So...what about you? I assure you, the time will fly just by as you engage in this DVD series.
My only wish is that all 6 parts were on one DVD. Each is 10-15 minutes and they all could have fit on 1 disk. I guess a walk to the DVD player to change the DVD is a good thing!?!?

I've watched it twice now and taken notes. Marcus Buckingham, the author of "Now, Discover Your Strengths" speaks in each movie for 10-15 minute clips about the essentials of developing your talents into strengths and being part of the 20% of people who say they use their strengths every day. He has a gift of explaining the essence and dynamics of strengths.
The movies have a story running in the background, which plays at key intervals throughout each film. The story highlights the life of a school-aged boy who is unwittingly stuck playing the trombone in the school orchestra, when he'd much rather be playing the drums. As the movies progress, he takes the necessary steps to do what he loves. The steps he takes follow Marcus's main points in the film and adds a nice touch to this excellent production.

I read the book Go Put Your Strengths to Work and thought it was incredible. It's a drastic mind shift from the traditional "fix what's broken" attitude. This video series is incredibly inventive - it drives home a point while being interesting to watch. I intend on taking these videos and turning them into a development program for my employees.

When I first say this video, I was set back in amazement on how cleaver Marcus has made a "talking head" video. It is the best I've ever seen and the application is for all businesses and non-profits. I'm going to order 10 more to give to my business friends. I can't say enough to recommend this series. This is well done!

This DVD set is okay, but overpriced for the amount of information it delivers. Maybe it's just me, having seen Marcus Buckingham on a couple of TV shows, but there wasn't enough info in this to really get my teeth into. Once I've read his book, maybe I'll go back and watch it with different feelings, but it is an expensive tool that didn't really offer enough specific advice, more theory and introduction to his ideas.

I really connected to Marcus in this film series...he explained what strengths are, how to better identify your strengths and play up your strengths in all parts of your life. I like the way he speaks to his audience...not over their head - he is very easy to understand, he is clear with his explainations. Loved it!!

I recommend this to anyone that is searching for their calling, for something that they can work hard and love doing it. I enjoyed it! It's worth it, and share it with others. If everyone did what they loved to do, they'd be happy, their would be 1000% better quality and who knows what we could accomplish.
