5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Teacher
I just finished several "stone blocks" in my dining room, and I am almost embarrassed to say that I literally squealed with delight at how easy it was and how good it turned out! And I'm not a novice painter; I'm a NON-painter. Roberta Gordon-Smith is one of those gifted people who can teach her subject to anyone...truly. Thank you SO much =)

3.0 out of 5 stars Content is of quality but with little diversity
This book could be of no help or inspiration to me for the decoration projects I have which are more "murals" like. The exemples depicted are fun, well detailed and well explained but cover mainly household items on shelves all in the modern folk art tradition. These can look really nice in a home but I have trompe l'oeil windows, arches and blue skies in...

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful step by step instructional book full of ideas, May 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Trompe L'Oeil: Creating Decorative Illusions with Paint (Hardcover)
I recieved this book looking for inspirations and ideas for my boring walls. I found many ideas I could use throughout my home. One thing I thought could have been improved on was the artists renditions of the pieces in the book. The shading is very chalky looking but can easily be fixed when you apply it to your walls. Over all a very good inspiring book to turn to for wall covering ideas.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really great book to own after all, March 17, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Trompe L'Oeil: Creating Decorative Illusions with Paint (Hardcover)
I have been using this book for a while now, and i would like to increase my previous review rating from 3 to 5 stars. I have had a chance to compare this book with other literature and i now realise what a great resource book it is. The instructions are easy to follow and i was able to apply the simple techniques it contains to the more elaborate trompe l'oeils that i wished to attempt - where other materials had led me to beleive that this would be beyond my ability. I have also come to appreciate the short and simple list of material needed for each project making this book a true source of inspiration.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great resource book for beginners and accomplished artists, March 25, 1999

My art teacher offered this book to students in my first class on painting murals and furniture. I found it to be an excellent source of ideas for beginners and those with previous experience. The step by step directions made it very easy for me, as a beginner, to get acceptable results the first time, plus there are fabulous projects for those with more advanced skills. Thanks so much for such a great resource book.

These can look really nice in a home but I have trompe l'oeil windows, arches and blue skies in mind for mine and couldn't find any in there. Number of stars depends on needs... and I need another book.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book., May 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Trompe L'Oeil: Creating Decorative Illusions with Paint (Hardcover)
Having attempted Tromp l'Oeil on my own with only painting on a much smaller scale as experience, I found this book to be a great technique book as well as totally inspiring!! I am ready to begin again, but properly, as a result of the ready information in this fantastic book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great intoduction to how Trompe L'oell is done., August 17, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Trompe L'Oeil: Creating Decorative Illusions with Paint (Hardcover)
I was looking for a book that explained what Trompe L'oell was and if it was possible for me, a not so talented painter, to do some of this in my own home. This book answered all of my beginner questions, gave me the confidence to try it myself, and gave me ideas of what I wanted to paint where.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow - visitors to my home rave about my walls, April 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Trompe L'Oeil: Creating Decorative Illusions with Paint (Hardcover)
I purchased this book a year ago and have added to murals in my kitchen over the past year. Vistor's rave about my work, most of which is based on this book. The wisteria is everyone's favorite.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good IF you're a beginner..., December 4, 2001
By
This review is from: Trompe L'Oeil: Creating Decorative Illusions with Paint (Hardcover)
This is just a so-so book. It is most helpful for novice painters or total beginners. The projects in the book are relatively basic and they have been "done before" (many, many, many times). Professional and serious decorative painters will find the projects in this book elementary.

This book was not very useful to me as a professional decorative painter.
