4.0 out of 5 stars Black Sunday doesn't lead to Blue Monday..., October 10, 2005
This review is from: Tronic Blanc (Audio CD)
Contrary to what some might think, p person can have a black Sunday without it leading to a blue Monday. Take the band Black Sunday, who sound nothing like New Order's "Blue Monday." I don't know if there's a dessert called "Black Sundae," but rest assured this is nothing like it, although it's pretty sweet, esp. if you're in the mood for noisy indie rock with electronics.

Essentially the one-woman project of someone identified only as "Alicja," Black Sunday make use of the kind of analog synths favored by labelmates The Cripples. Alicja adds in lots more guitars, though, often sounding something like "Daydream Nation" era Sonic Youth, but more often like very early versions of punk rock, i.e. the Dead Boys, or better yet long lost San Francisco legends the Screamers. "You're Gonna See Me" starts off like a particuarly melodic Screamers track, but suddenly a majestic wave of epic guitars. "This Heart is Now Aluminum" is a synth-punk rave-up, with a chorus made for singing along to. "I'm not a machine," Alicja sings on "Modulated Simulated," but you better believe she knows a thing or two about using her machines, which is proven on the short instrumental "Good Dreams," which is the kind of thing Gary Numan could've done.

Mind you, a real Black Sunday might mean doing something stupid, like going to church. This is one Black Sunday that's guranteed to be more productive. No, this won't change your life, but then it wasn't meant to.
