Book Description

A psychological mystery from the acclaimed author of Deal with the Devil

The two halves of his world are about to collide...

Captain Charles Ellandun lives in two worlds. With NATO's Rapid Response team, he rescues embassies in trouble and takes drinking water to remote villages shattered by earthquakes.

Between assignments, he stays with his Aunt Edith in Boston, where she sponsors art shows at the local gallery. It's all very civilized and satisfying, with occasional bursts of mayhem and violence as seasoning. Best yet, he need never deal with his family, his perfect brother, his distant, demanding, disappointed father.

But then the war savages his unit -- and him. It implants a ferocious, repeating memory that he can't shake.

Then someone murders Aunt Edith. And then someone tries to run him over with a Suburban. Unless he wants to be the next one dead, he must figure out why she is. Like
it or not, Charles must dig into her past and haul it into his present.

Even if it rips his carefully cultivated world to shrapnel.

Even if it costs him his life.

Length: 125,000 words, 340 pages

*******

If I was stupid enough to sit out in the rain, then I shouldn't complain if my friendly neighborhood murderer came to call.

My adrenaline skipped second gear and shot into third. Thankfully, this time my training kicked in, too. I sat still and waited, counting the raindrops as they splashed into the pool at my feet. For a moment I almost expected the surface of the pond to ripple, like in Jurassic Park when the T-rex thundered near.

Then as casually as I could, I dropped my hands to my knees and rose from the bench, pretending everything was normal, I'd had my brown study and was ready to go indoors. Whatever lizard came at me, I could deal with it better on my feet than my backside.

But I didn't make it all the way up. Something silky and strong and very very black suddenly wrapped over my head and shoulders, squeezing my arms against my sides. The soft stuff crowded my nose, stole my sight, even stopped my breathing for a panicky explosive moment. It was as if the blackness enveloping me was a living extension of the night, trapping my arms and attacking while I was helpless.

Then behind me, a voice cursed. It broke the spell. Helpless I may be against something primeval; humans I could handle.

Editorial Reviews

Review

From the author of Deal with the Devil -- the story of a family at war with itself.

"A wonderful blend of everything -- mystery, paramilitary-style action, romance, family saga. Not a grab-bag of ingredients carelessly tossed together, but magnificent strands woven together into intricate, mutually supporting patterns." J Yendor

"Charles ... reminded me of a few vets ... at the VA Medical Center... Grey has a unique way of ... taking you from present time to days gone by each time giving you something more... Charles even with war torn memories delivered it in the end. These guys are often forgotten or abused in many books like this." Logic101

"Good story." gayle ury

5.0 out of 5 stars Action, Mystery, Great Characters November 10, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've found a new favorite mystery writer--J. Gunnar Grey.

After reading Grey's Deal With The Devil, Part One and Deal With the Devil Part Two, I knew I enjoyed her very capable and creative writing style. In Trophies (The Ellandun Wars) she has created another winner. The complex plot and the action scenes in this book kept me turning pages, but it's the characters that will stay with me, especially the protagonist Charles (AKA "Robbie".) A pivotal event in Charles's childhood and the effects it had on him all his life made me care about him, especially as he worked to resolve his life-long anger and pain. His attacks of post-traumatic stress syndrome were presented in a startling and realistic manner--I could feel his terror. Although he is a master thief, he is a moral man--a contrast that makes him even more interesting. The other characters were well-defined too. I enjoyed Grey's humor throughout, and the ending left me satisfied.

I highly recommend Trophies to readers of all ages (no profanity, sex, graphic violence), and I'm looking forward to future books in the Ellandun Wars series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love a Good Mystery, This is Your Book!!! October 21, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
It has been a long time since I have found myself engrossed in a "modern" mystery. The reason is simple: I am not a fan. With apologies to this author, J. Gunnar Grey, my favourite mystery writer is Agatha Christie. I also enjoy Georges Simenon, Earl Stanley Gardner, Samuel Dashiell Hammett, Ross Macdonald, and their contemporaries. I had about given up trying to find a modern mystery writer, who wrote to my taste, until I read J. Gunnar Grey's: "Trophies (The Ellandun Wars)".

At last, I found an exciting new mystery author! J. Gunnar Grey describes herself as `The 1940 Mystery Writer' - maybe that's why I appreciate her writing as much as I do!

Whatever the reason, "Trophies" is an excellent mystery novel. And even though I know the ending, it deserves re-reading.

The main character, Captain Charles Ellandun, is quite complex, and the novel is written through his eyes, delving into different stages in his life. It is in the current time frame that is the home of the murder, the murder of Charles' aging Aunt Edith. An unbelievable murder from Charles' standpoint. Why anyone would want to kill the one woman, who glowed in Charles' past and present life, became a mystery for Charles to solve, before he became the next victim.

Charles, a war veteran, who is plagued with dark memories, vivid flashbacks, and at times finds himself back at war holding a gun. These flashbacks can occur at any time, but are strongly triggered as Charles' find himself at the centre of Aunt Edith's murder. The flashbacks take him completely out of the present time zone, becoming a short blackout occurring at any moment, which could prove to be somewhat dangerous.

We are transported back to Charles' youth, teenage years, and as a young adult.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complex Character Study Mystery September 14, 2011
By Reader
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Trophies is a complex mystery that starts slowly by delving into Charles Ellandun's mysterious character and background as well as the murder of his wealthy and beloved aunt. Lots of themes twist into this, from the idea of collecting trophies to close family relationships. Have patience - Grey's mastery of suspense kicked in in the last half of the book and leaves you wanting more. I'd love to see more of these characters in their escapades as a Special Op team!

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing blend of genres February 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I started reading the book, not knowing what I would find. And it turned out to be a wonderful blend of everything -- mystery, paramilitary-style action, romance, family saga. Not a grab-bag of ingredients carelessly tossed together, but magnificent strands woven together into intricate, mutually supporting patterns. And comedy too: no words can describe how incredibly funny it was when Theresa complained that she could not take commercial airlines because she wanted to bring her kit along, "just in case". Each individual faucet of the story sparkles, but does not overwhelm.

And I love the characters, who span the entire spectrum from a weary soldier to a cold, strict father to a mousy cousin. Charles, Caren, Edith, Patty, they all continue to develop as the story unfolds, and you begin to know them. Oh, and Sherlock too -- I am telling you, Jack Ryan had nothing on that guy.

I simply love, love, love this book. You don't want to miss it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good entertainment November 28, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Overall, this was a good story, it kept my interest enough that I finished it within a couple days, despite its length. There was a lot of psychology to this story, a lot of the main character facing things in his past he had not wanted to face before. At times, it is almost too touchy-feely (you can tell this is written by a lady, not a guy), but if you like psychology, you'll be fine.

My biggest gripe is certain parts of the military aspect. I have been 12 years married to a military man, and some of the things she writes (all minor, but still...) should have been better researched. Military personnel, set your expertise aside when you read this, or you'll get irritated. I was laughing at some points because I was thinking of what my husband would say if it were a movie...

As stories go, though, it is a pretty good one, and the format for this Kindle edition was perfect, no typing or editing errors that I noticed. Smooth reading, romantically clean, and good entertainment for a rainy day or two!

More About the Author

Hi, I'm Gunnar Grey. I write books. I'm a historian, political junkie, target shooter, and retired adventurer and equestrian. I read avidly and post reviews or at least ratings for most of the books I read. Occasionally my poor husband surfaces from beneath a pile of paperbacks gasping for air... but I shouldn't bore you with personal issues.

I live in Humble, Texas, just north of Houston, with four parakeets, the aforementioned husband (who's even more entertaining than the birds), an orange betta fish with no manners, a fig tree, the lawn from the bad place, three armloads of potted plants, and a coffee maker that's likely the most important item we own.
