Editorial Reviews

"[Jennifer Shea's] book does include recipes for her shop’s cupcakes, from chocolate and vanilla to locally famous specialties like the S’mores version featured on the Martha Stewart show. But it’s also got really a party planning guide for both kid and adult celebrations, with guidelines and accompanying recipes for decorations like fairy wands for a Forest Fairy Tea Party or even painted wooden buoys for a nautically themed Life Aquatic party."
The Seattle Times

"...owner/baker/party-planner Shea sets the collection apart by including themed celebration ideas for adults and kids. There’s also a smattering of DIY craft instructions and decorating tips."
Seattle Weekly

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Notch Idea Book October 23, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I buy A LOT of baking, specialty cooking and crafting books. I write a baking, crafting and party blog, so I tend to think I know it all, ha, but still love to buy the books. Anyway, I was so blown away by the amount of detail in this book and the sheer volume of ideas. The recipes are fantastic, but this book is also such a good baking, crafting and party resource - for beginner crafters and bakers, but also for people who think they know it all...ha, like me.

The party ideas and recipes are styled so well, they are super inspirational without being too fussy. The photography is amazing, and the crafting instructions are clear and precise.

My favorite thing about the book is the page-by-page resource guide found at the end. Every prop, every tool, is catalogued and accounted for. So many books gloss over this, and for people like me, people who know the basics, a lot of time the resources are mostly what I'm interested in.

For beginners there's a great craft tool and baking tool top 10, some basic icing instructions, and a guide on how to find the best ingredients. The book is broken into sections with party ideas, and the party ideas include a recipe, a drink, a craft, and ideas for decorating. My favorite parties are: one inspired by Andy Warhol, SO original, and a Parisian themed one. But there are a lot of good ideas in each party.

I'm just so impressed by the quality of this book. This is the type of detail and instruction for other baking and crafting books to aspire to. The ideas are original and easily adaptable. This project was obviously done without cutting any corners, and I really respect that.

** I would like to add I have tried 4 of the cupcake recipes and each of them is INSANELY yummy. The peanut butter buttercream is a sinful experience and I made myself an entire 3-layer-cake covered in it. The end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Detailed and Delightful! October 5, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I pre-ordered this book because I am a fan of Trophy Cupcakes. Once I got the book, I was impressed with the amount of thought and detail that went into every party from invite to decor to food. Additionally, the photos are gorgeous and very inspirational! Using this book, someone can easily host a 50th Anniversary party one day and a "Hungry Catepillar" fete the next. Trophy Tips and Tricks are included at the beginning, recipes are in the back and pro tips are sprinkled throughout. The first recipe I tried was the S'mores Cupcake. Out of laziness, I opted to make the vanilla buttercream instead of the recommended meringue and the result tasted just like the frosting that Trophy puts on their cupcakes. A definite delight!

5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious recipes February 14, 2014
I purchased this cookbook a few weeks ago after discovering Trophy Cupcakes on Instagram. I live on the east coast so I have never heard of them before. I have to say all the cupcake and icing recipes I have tried so far have been delicious! Like others have said the detail in the recipes are great! In the past when I've made buttercream frosting its never turned out that great but she lets you know exactly how long you should beat the butter right down to the 'sound' it should make in the mixer. Now I end up with perfect icing every time that pipes well but is still light and fluffy! All the other frosting tips, decorating ideas and her source guide are wonderful. A very well thought out cookbook! I've been so excited over this cookbook I've been making cupcakes once a week!

By Gaby
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I have bought cupcakes from this shop before and they are delicious. I have made the red velvet cupcakes, vanilla, hummingbird, lime and blueberry pie and all them taste exactly if not pretty close as the ones they sell at the store. They are delicious, very happy with the purchase

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous recipes and great party tips! January 4, 2014
I have been a lover of Trophy's cupcakes since they opened their first doors. I no longer live in Seattle and a friend sent me this book for Christmas. I was over the moon excited to find my favorite Hummingbird recipe as well as several others in the book. What I didn't expect to find though were the incredibly helpful technical tips and party advice. I work in the event and visual merchandising industry and consider myself a well versed party planner and yet I learned A LOT of tips and new ideas. The book is a greet value and worth every penny!

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Cupcake Conversion Complete! November 16, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Promise me you won't tell, but I don't really enjoy baking all that much. Love to cook, but baking ... not so much. Still, I want my family to have awesome birthday parties with perfect cakes and I think my son would be disappointed if I just bought cakes at the store. It just seems wrong.

I bought this book thinking that there would be a variety of interesting cupcake combinations and I was not disappointed. This book really delivers. I find myself thinking I might choose to bake more often. Thanks for putting together a comprehensive and creative book that helps make even the most reticent of bakers successful.

3.0 out of 5 stars FYI: 70% party, 30% recipes July 8, 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Perhaps I went in with too high expectations based on the superlative reviews, but I bought it thinking this would be my go-to cupcake recipe book, and this falls short of that goal. My main criticism is that it's touted as a recipe book, but I think it is predominantly a party book.
The chocolate cupcake recipe I tried looked stunning - nice dome and all - but was firm, not soft as we like our cupcakes, better suited to filled cakes, IMHO. Taste was so-so.
The two buttercream recipes, vanilla and strawberry, that I tried were good - too sweet for my tastes but others liked it.
It does have a lot of party ideas but most of them were not my style, but that is personal. The photos are beautiful, and if you're looking for party ideas and recipes, it's definitely a buy; but if you're not sure, I'd say check it out at the library before going for it. I wish I had. Hope this helps.

More About the Author

Jennifer Shea has been a baker and dessert-maker extraordinaire ever since she leveraged her grandma's favorite pumpkin roll recipe into 4-H ribbons as a little girl. Over time, she became the trusted yumminess go-to for friends, baking up countless confections for baby showers, birthday parties and weddings. Ultimately, Jennifer combined her personal and professional baking passions with a nutrition degree from Bastyr University. At Bastyr, she did not become a sworn enemy of all things sweet. Rather, she learned the importance of quality ingredients--a trademark that infuses her baking today.

In 2007, Jennifer and her husband Michael Williamson flipped on the vintage schoolhouse lights at their first Trophy shop in Wallingford Center--and Seattleites began lining up for Trophy's mouthwatering masterpieces. Customers and press praised Jennifer's cupcakes, and Martha Stewart lauded them as "utterly delicious" when Jennifer appeared on Martha's show in 2008. Her cupcakes have also been featured in Vanity Fair and Sunset Magazine and on The Food Network. Trophy has been voted "Best Cupcake Shop" for four years running by Seattle Magazine, who recently named Jennifer #21 in the "Top 70 Power Players of the Seattle Food World".

Five more Trophy locations (University Village, Pacific Place, CenturyLink Field, Husky Stadium and The Bravern in Bellevue), and a five-year-old son (Fleetwood) later, Jennifer runs around a lot these days. In her "spare" time, Jennifer can be touring in support of her new book (Trophy Cupcakes and Parties!, Sasquatch, September 2013) and dreaming up and testing exotic cupcake flavors like Orange Almond Rose and Lavender Crème Brûlée -- adding to her endlessly creative, delectable desserts.
