This review is from: Tropical Rain Forests of the Far East (Oxford Science Publications) (Paperback)
Whitmore's classical book is already a few decades old. Consequently it does not include results of modern research and plenty of questions remain unanswered in the book. An emphasis is on the dipterocarp forests of Malay Peninsula and Borneo, but the whole area from Sri Lanka to Melanesia and Queensland is discussed at least shortly. Topics include forest structure, animals, climate, seasonal cycles, regeneration, silviculture, growth rates and biomass, nutrient cycling, soils, forest formations, man's impact and future. A lot of tree species have been mentioned. There are plenty of black and white photos of adequate quality. An index of plant names, with families they belong to, is included.
