Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8-11–Most girls would love to spend their summer on a tropical island. But as she sits at the Aruba airport, sweating from the heat and trying to scratch an itch inside her leg cast, Morgan just knows she's going to hate it. She and her dad have grown apart over the years, and she predicts that this summer will be a disaster: her fair Irish skin will burn, she'll be bored, and she won't have any friends. Soon, though, she's carving out a life in this corner of paradise. A cute boy, a new friend, a job, and the sheer beauty of the island start to win Morgan over. Then she discovers that her dad may be into something illegal and is in real trouble. This breezy romance captures the ups and downs of teenage emotions without burdening readers with heavy drama. The setting is beautifully but simply described, the plot moves swiftly, the romance is just this side of hot, and the danger is scary. Suggest this to teens looking for a light, fun beach read.–Heather E. Miller, Homewood Public Library, AL

More About the Author

Jan Coffey
(a.k.a. Nikoo & Jim McGoldrick)
Nikoo and Jim McGoldrick are storytellers with a checkered past.
From the submarine shipyards of Electric Boat in Groton, Connecticut, and the clubs of Rodeo Drive, to the forges of Pennsylvania and the electronics manufacturers of Massachusetts, these two have spent their lives gathering material for their novels. Nikoo, a manufacturing engineer, and Jim, who has a Ph.D. in sixteenth-century British literature, wrote their first full-length novel in 1994. Since then, Jim and Nikoo have written twenty-seven novels and a work of nonfiction, and they are presently focusing their imaginations on producing romantic suspense thrillers with a decidedly technological slant.
The "Jan Coffey" pseudonym, one of several they have used, is actually a play on their own names: Jan is an acronym for "Jim and Nikoo," and Coffey is Nikoo's maiden name.
These prolific and popular authors have been the recipients of numerous awards for their work. They now reside in Watertown, Connecticut.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Beach Read, June 3, 2005

Seventeen-year-old Morgan Callahan just knows that her summer is going to stink like a dozen rotten eggs. It's bad enough that her boyfriend has just dumped her, calling her emotionless, leaving her without a date to the Junior Prom, as well as a broken leg, which is now trapped in a cast amidst all this crucial heat, but now she has arrived in Aruba to spend the summer with her father. Or, rather, her ESTRANGED father, seeing as how he hasn't so much as even visited her in over three years. The vacation starts out just how Morgan expected it to. Horribly. She is forced to wait over an hour to be picked up at the airport, and when her ride does turn up, he's totally gorgeous, goes by the name of Cyrus "Cy" Reed, and has every girl in Aruba after him. There's an instant attraction between Cy and Morgan, but that attraction is semi-put on hold due to the fact that Morgan realizes that her father is up to something fishy, something that she has decided to stick her nose into, even if she's putting herself in danger.

I'm a HUGE fan of HarperCollins' Summer Romance series, and have loved many of the books that have been published from it. Hence, I knew that I had to read TROPICAL KISS. Morgan is a fiery character, who is spunky and self-assured, and a great addition to the characters gracing the pages of teen fiction nowadays. Her partner in crime, Cy, is entertaining, while at the same time eye candy for every girl in Aruba. The romance between the two of them is sweet, and fun to read about - especially if you're lounging on the shore at the beach, or by the side of a pool - but it's the mystery that really grabbed my attention. Overall, this is an entertaining addition to the Summer Romance series that will be enjoyed by female readers young and old.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just a love story!, May 19, 2005

This book was really great. I first saw it at borders, and the cover was really cute, so i bought it. (I know, don't judge a book by its cover, but i just can't help it!) Anyways, this girl Morgan is visiting her father in Aruba, when she starts to go out with her dad's assistant. They have the time of their lives going out, but then Morgan starts noticing that her dad is always around strange people, and she is scared he's breaking the law! I'm not going to spoil the end, but Morgan, her boyfriend, and her dad are all happy! It's SUCH a good ending! surprising too!

5.0 out of 5 stars tropical paradise, June 29, 2005
This review is from: Tropical Kiss (Paperback)
Mrgan hasn't seen her father for 3 years. Now that she is 17, the last thing she wants is to be foisted onto her father for a summer in Aruba while her mother honeymoons in India. When Morgan arrives, broken leg and all, she is greeted by Cy, her father's college age intern. Morgan has little hope for a great summer, expecting to simply be dragged around by Cy, who she assumes will be her babysitter. When she and Cy begin to fall in love, the summer from hell starts to brighten up. As Morgan makes new friends and has fun, only one thing bothers her. Her mysterious father seems to be trying so hard to reach out to her, while at the same time pushing her away to keep his secrets. Is he involved in something illegal? And if so, does that mean she is in danger?
