Book Description

Jaguar Books on Latin America (Paper), No 2 August 1993
This work aims to help the student, scholar or general reader understand the many issues involved in saving Latin America's endangered rainforests. The salvage of this vast ecosystem - so necessary for survival on this planet - depends upon recognition of the complex interplay of political and economic interests which have led to the forest's almost-inevitable destruction. The 30 articles are culled from many different fields, including natural history, sociology, history, anthropology, economics and fiction. They are divided into four parts: perceptions (of the rainforest); explanations (of the destruction of the rainforests); why save the rainforest?; and prospects for development (alternative futures for the rainforest). The author's introduction and notes preceding each article provide an organised context for each essay.

Review

"A crucial reader in one of the most pressing environmental and sustainable development issues, a book that includes the work of economists, naturalists, anthropologists, geologists, and others, and presents in one volume many of the essential ideas and observations on this question." - British Bulletin of Publications on Latin America, the Caribbean, Portugal and Spain "The gradual destruction of tropical rainforests is one of the most significant events in Latin American history. Tropical Rainforests gives a concise yet nuanced introduction to a complicated issue." - H-Net Book Review --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Hey! This book was a required reading for a Topics in Latin America course and I learned a ton about eco-politics and romanticism of the rainforest. It was a great book and I plan to read the rest in my free time!
