5.0 out of 5 stars Hawaiian Food in the Blue Ridge Mountains, July 6, 2006
This review is from: Tropical Taste (Spiral-bound)
Several years ago, I had the good fortune to live on the Hawaiian islands of Oahu, Maui, and Kauai. I've traded the beach and ocean for the Blue Ridge Mountains now, but I remember well the wonderful foods of Hawaii. This book has enabled me to create that distinctive taste right here in the North Carolina mountains. Thank you, Sonia Martinez, for writing this easy-to-read and easy-to-cook-from book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tropical Taste whets the appetite for Hawaii, July 9, 2006

This review is from: Tropical Taste (Spiral-bound)
My mouth is watering after reading Tropical Taste. It's one of the most informative and enticing books I've every read about the fresh produce and local foods of the Hawaiian islands. From mangoes to guavas, carambola to coconuts, Sonia Martinez educates and entertains about the local fruits, vegetables, and produce, with practical descriptions and historical background. And the recipes, along with the author's tips and suggestions, are reason enough to enjoy this wonderful book! The Pineapple-Macadamia Charlotte is magnificent and easy to prepare; and I can't wait to try the Banana Bread Pudding.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Presentation -- Great Recipes!, July 6, 2006
This review is from: Tropical Taste (Spiral-bound)
Sonia Martinez is a master of beautifully styled and presented food! OK, she does have an advantage with all of that tropical foliage that is so abundant in her adopted home, Hawaii.

Sonia is unique in that she has added a touch of Cuba to many traditional Hawaiian dishes. There are many similarities in the raw ingredients -- both cultures enjoy many of the same tropical fruits and vegetables. We have yet to develop a taste for poi, but the way she serves it in baked orange shells looks very appetizing.

If you enjoy Caribbean food, Tropical Taste is definitely worth adding to your cookbook collection. If you have been to Hawaii and enjoyed the local cuisine, this book is a must!

Highly Recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars "Tropical Taste" is a Tropical TREAT!, July 8, 2006
This review is from: Tropical Taste (Spiral-bound)
Sonia Martinez is a walking encyclopedia on all things food related and that comes through loud and clear in her cookbook, "Tropical Taste". From mangoes to taro and liliko'i to papaya she shares her knowledge and vast treasure of recipes with those fortunate enough to own her cookbook. Don't be surprised to also find recipes using sweet potatoes, red bell peppers, avocado and chayote, as her life before Hawaii included her birthplace of Cuba and her growing up years in South Carolina and Florida. "Tropical Taste" is the wonderful result of what happens when all that is brought together by such a foodie as Sonia in such a location as Hawaii. I highly recommend "Tropical Taste" and I am eagerly anticipating volume 2!

When Sonia's Tropical Taste cookbook first came out, I enjoyed it so much I bought copies as Christmas gifts for several family members and friends. 5.0 out of 5 stars A Delicious Treat for Eyes and Palate, July 7, 2006
This review is from: Tropical Taste (Spiral-bound)
Sonia Martinez is a real foodie. She puts her heart and soul into her cooking and this certainly comes across in her recipes and other writings. Sonia's recipes are creative but definitely not beyond the skills of the average home cook, although she brings the flair of a professional into each one.
Those who have not tasted the lush sweetness of a ripe mango have a treat in store. Even here in the midwest, I've been scouring the produce aisles and enjoying Tropical Taste.
