3.0 out of 5 stars Familiar tunes Latin style, November 13, 2003

Enrique Torres "Rico" (San Diegotitlan, Califas) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Rmm Tropical Tribute to Beatles (Audio CD)
One of the most interesting and challenging CD's to emerge from the tropical music bins in recent years was this tribute disc. Take some of the most recognizeable songs made famous by the Beatles, add some Latin sabor(flavor) by the heavyweights in tropical music and you have a mixed bag of songs that sometimes work . One of the problems is the inevitable comparison to the originals. Whenever the song is close to the original it fails to inspire. One such song is the classic John Lennon & Paul McCarthney number entitled "Let it Be" where Tito Nieves's English version is ok but not great. Whenever he ventures into Spanish and kicks the rhythms up a notch the song suddenly sounds invigorated and fresh. The adaptations in Spanish sound the best on this disc; the problem is there aren't enough of them. One of the highlights on this disc is the featuring of two legends who have recently left our plane of existence, Celia Cruz and Tito Puente. Celia Cruz, the Queen of Salsa turns in a superb performance on "Obladi, Oblada" in Spanish that is a huge reminder of her greatness. Oscar de Leon does justice to "Lady Madonna," again mostly because of the Spanish adaptation coupled with his improvisational scat singing skills. "Yesterday," the McCarthney & Lennon song, as old Paul has so requested by the courts there songs be known by in credits, is a lukewarm song that only heats up when the ending crescendoes in Spanish. "Un Gran Amor" or as it is more commonly known "And I Love her" is beautifully sung by Jose Alberto "El Canario". The closing song is a bilingual version of "Come Together" with all participants from the project joining in, led by Celia Cruz and driven on percussion by the timbales of the legendary Tito Puente. An ambitious project with mixed results is the end result of all of these artists offering a tribute album to the Beatles. The colorful cover is a take off on the "Sergeant Pepper" album and features a who's who of tropical music that includes identification in the booklet which has all the lyrics. Recommended for curious or have to have everything Beatle fanatics or especially Spanish speakers who grew up on the Beatles and fans of tropical music. Total running time is 62:45.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent tropical tribute, June 28, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Rmm Tropical Tribute to Beatles (Audio CD)
If you like The Beatles and enjoy tropical music, this is the CD for you! Being born in Puerto Rico and a true Beatle fan, I have enjoyed this CD tremendously. My favorites: "Hey Jude", "Come Together" (in salsa beat) and "I want to hold your hand" (in merengue beat). Put on your dancing shoes, grab your partner and dance the night away to the "Tropical Tribute to The Beatles"!

Rmm Tropical Tribute to Beatles

This recording is historical in that it combines some of the great songs of The Beatles with the very talented RMM Latin All-Star performing artists, with salsa/Latin arrangements that somehow still remain true to the original song melodies.

Before this CD's release back in 1995, to my knowledge, this had not been done before, but, it makes sense that it finally has been!

That alone would make this a groundbreaking work. In addition to that, the RMM atists, such as the late Celia Cruz & Tito Puente, Oscar D'Leon, Tito Nieves, Johnny Rivera, Jose "El Canario" Alberto & others, all put their unique & distinctive spin on these Beatles classics.

Early in their career,The Beatles recorded a version of the Spanish song classic,"Besame Mucho",and some of The Fab Fours other early songs had a very noticeable "Latin Tinge" influence, reflected in the then bossa nova musical boom from Brazil. In some tunes such as "P.S.,I Love You", & "Ask Me Why", that "Cha, Cha, Cha" beat and Latin touch is apparent. On later songs such as "No Reply" & "Mr. Moonlight", they would continue the tradition of that Latin influence.

With this groundbreaking recording, some of the greatest Latin recording artists ever assembled return the favor of The Beatles musical influence & genius with a classic recording of their own.
