Editorial Reviews

In the troubadour tradition, travelling musicians carried news and culture from one region to the other. For those of us not lucky enough to catch modern troubadour Mesut Özgen’s multi-sensory performances, his first solo release lets us in on the news. Özgen is widely known for making classical guitar accessible to a wide-range of music lovers. Troubadour is no exception, offering compositions inspired by Spanish, Turkish, American, Hungarian, Argentinean and Indian folk musics. Featuring compositions by Carlo Domeniconi, Anthony Newman, and the prolific Christopher Pratorius.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Playing from a Great Player, April 9, 2008
By

This review is from: Troubadour (Audio CD)
I'm a music teacher and I use this CD to inspire both myself and my students. Mesut taught me guitar a few years ago at UCSC, and I was always amazed at his intensity and attention to detail. His technique on the guitar is impeccable, and his focus and single-mindedness show as he rips off dazzling runs without a single hitch. I remember not really believing my eyes or my ears watching him play. What is amazing really is that something so rooted in discipline could become so moving to listen to. His version of "La Misionera" is hot! I play it for my high school students to get their attention toward playing classical music. What happens? Their jaws drop to the floor, and they want to know more. Me? Whenever I'm feeling tired or complacent, I can listen to Mesut and be inspired to press on. I think this disc does him justice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mesmerising quiet journey of world music with the master guitarist, February 27, 2008
By
gracesantacruz (Santa Cruz, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Troubadour (Audio CD)
This CD as a whole is like a beautiful journey visiting old landscapes of different parts of the world. It takes you to such a deep, rich place that you even forget about Mesut Ozgen's amazing technique, your daily busy-ness, and which century you are in.

I am not good at commenting the details of piece by piece, but most of pieces are only by single instrument of his guitar, and that is perfect.

I particularly love the first one "Anatolian Folk Song" and "Shenandoah"--so beautiful! Each of sounds from strings are so clean and so expressive, showing his genius and his technique.

Highly recommended. Very lovable to different groups of people with varieties of tastes in music.
