5.0 out of 5 stars Fully worth waiting for
Pat Macdonald, one of the now-solo halfs of Timbuk3, continues to create a deeply uncompromised music out of the idioms of the deadliest swamp blues, strained through a sharply agonized 21st century intelligence. Pat can't, won't let go of the pain, until it's time, if that time ever comes. This music was made like a Japanese samurai's sword - heated, bent, and folded,...

This music was made like a Japanese samurai's sword - heated, bent, and folded, over and over, until it becomes as hard as it is supple. The edge of this music is razor-thin - three revenge songs from an collapsed marriage (according to the liner notes) - but Pat Macdonald had made an album about survival, not defeat. Not a bad song on it. Get it right now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hidden Jewel, August 18, 2007
This review is from: Troubadour of Stomp (Audio CD)
pat mAcdonald...yes, that's how he wants it spelled...is perhaps the most inviting and friendly person you would ever chance upon. That's exactly what happened to me this spring and I've got to say, what a gifted and genius man he is! The talent that flows so effortlessly from pat is truly unique in this otherwise patsy world. That he is'nt one of the great "known" talents is a joke...but I think maybe he wants it that way? Consider yourself very lucky to see him perform...it's rare and beautiful!

It is too bad that so many artists are afflicted with severe depression... too bad for THEM, that is. The rest of us are free to enjoy the fruits of their cynical genius. Pat Mac Donald is one such tortured soul.

Timbuk 3, his Austin, Texas-based combo, helped to keep me angry through the Reagan/Bush years. Now, from his new European home, he has done the same for the W years. Great music, scathing lyrics and a window into a sharp, yet tormented mind. My idea of a great album!

This album (are they still called albums?) is more harder edged then is others and it is GREAT! hate to say it, but his pain sure makes some fantastic music. I recommend this album, and all of his others, to any one who is sick of all the prefabracted pop rock alternative music out there. Come back to the States Pat, and claim your place in the music world.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of all-time favorites, August 28, 2008

Long before I ever had the great fortune of getting to perform with pat mAcdonald, Troubadour of Stomp was one of my all-time favorite CDs.... I state that as a preface to dispel any accusations of nepotism or blind prejudice in his favor.... these songs speak to all of my musical sensibilities..... dark, low-end, visceral, sexy, gothic, Americana, phat, swampy rock... it is one of those CDs that you want to listen to as LOUD as humanly possible.... which IS possible since every tone has been put to the test of pat's notoriously particular sonic scrutiny... Troubadour of Stomp is one of those CDs that causes you to want to drive too fast (take that as a warning), dance like a fool set on fire and then find the nearest cute boy (or girl) to steal away with into a dark corner of a smokey club... I crave to hear these songs....

My opinion? The best album I heard in 2007, although I may have been late to the party. Just listen to "Shake Well" and do as the song instructs, shake until all the hurt is gone. By the way, search around and you'll find the mp3s available here on Amazon.

4.0 out of 5 stars he's back............, July 16, 2007
This review is from: Troubadour of Stomp (Audio CD)
I'm a long time fan of Timbuk3 and Pat & Barbara(Kooyman) Macdonald. I use their/his/her material on my community radio show often. (I cringe to hear them described as 'one hit wonders'; they are much better than that.) This cd is a great improvement from his previous effort. He is still an angry man. The songs have a tendency to stick to the same groove. I think he could have varied the selections a bit more. He's good enough not to get stuck in a musical rut. I wish liner notes were included with this release including lyrics. He tends to mumble at times. This should have been the follow up to the 'Sleeps With His Guitar' cd.
