Book Description

Nearly 40 stories have been collected from around the world and retold to celebrate the universal language of music. Well-known favorites, such as "The Pied Piper" and "The Magic Flute," are joined by lesser-known tales, such as "How the Fiddle Came to the Gypsies" and "The Singing Bone." Stories are drawn from Japan, China, Africa, Central and South America, and many European countries. Organized thematically, each section includes recommendations for comparison, activities, and extensions. Musicians, music lovers, storytellers, teachers, librarians, and parents will welcome this addition to folk literature.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Divided into themes like "Musical Miracles" and "Flutes and Panpipes," Troubadour's Storybag: Musical Folktales of the World by Norma J. Livo presents 38 stories. Each of its six sections ends with a list of suggested activities, like finding pertinent pictures and recordings; meeting with musicians and instrument makers; and making instruments from household items and found objects. This collection appeals to the ear more than the eye-it is unillustrated-but is a useful resource for discovering the overlapping roles of story and song.
