One of his last !
Delerue completed scoring this rather mean- spirited comedy only a few weeks before his untimely death in March of 1992. His music attempts to provide both humour and tenderness to the procedings, and I recommend listening to it apart from the film (which was a HUGE flop !)

The international anthem for serenity, February 12, 2007
Georges Delerue had a passion for music. He was born in Roubaix, France, in 1925 (and died in L.A. in 1992). He was first a self-taught musician but would then be taught by Darius Milhaud. In 1952, the O.R.T.F. (the national agency charged, between 1964 and 1974, with providing public radio and television in France) appointed him composer and conductor. As he belonged to the "Nouvelle Vague" of the French cinema, he worked with Truffaut, Resnais, Godard... He was also a picture musician for "Sons & Lumières" shows and composed music for ballets and stage shows, for which he received an Emmy Award in 1967 in New York : he would have a very successful career in the United-States. Gifted with a natural sense of melody, reflecting well the "à la française" music style, Georges Delerue was very appreciated by the audience for his personnal and professional musical style and he would surprise a lot of people. "Could you compose a piece of "light" music for a comedy but which should also reflect the tense and dramatic atmosphere of the film ?" Director Bob Rafelson questionned the composer before hiring him and they mentioned Milhaud, Satie, Poulenc... Delerue smiled and answered : "I cannot describe what I'm going to compose yet, but I think I can do better than that." And he did indeed, his music is outstandingly simple, beautiful, elegant and light, just as Delerue was as a person, such an endearing and touching individual. Just like me, be moved by the theme from Man Trouble, delightfully romantic (Henri Mancini knows how to do this too) on the piano with a string orchestra, this is just beautiful ! This was to be his last piece of work (he would never see the final editing of the film), a testimony for eternity. This music could become the international anthem for serenity. The film, a well-paced light comedy, deserves your full attention.
