Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Although only nineteen years old, this precocious redhead unleashes more sass and ambiguity in her voice than a woman twice her age. Fierce and musically assured, Bonnie McKee is a pop alternative to Avril Lavigne, traversing some of the same lyrical territory as the Canadian punk thrush but with more emotional intelligence and grit--quite an accomplishment since McKee didn't employ the glossy talents of the Matrix, or anyone else for that matter--the singer penned all twelve tracks herself. With a vocal range on par with Christina Aguilera, McKee manages to go from kittenish to feral in the space of a single song, and always seems to end up on top, no matter how many times she stumbles. "When It All Comes Down" may be the sound of heartbreak, but McKee refuses to wallow in her pain and plots her own eventual recovery in the space of a single song. By rights, this should be the anthem for anyone attempting to get over a breakup--without appearing to. "Confessions of a Teenage Girl," is so winsome and engaging, it could inspire a Fox TV show. But Bonnie McKee has talent to burn, so it wouldn't be a surprise if that's already in the works. Paired with Green Day producer, Rob Cavallo, McKee elevates post-teen rebellion and broken romance to high art--and this is only the beginning of what she's capable of. --Jaan Uhelszki

Product Description
"I want everyone in the world to know who I am," says audacious Seattle-bred 19-year-old singer-songwriter Bonnie McKee. "I want to move people. I want to open people up - and I want to last." With her debut album Trouble, produced by Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls, Alanis Morissette) and Bob Power - and its powerful anthem "Somebody" - McKee's bold pop-from-the-heart promises she will be not just a somebody but a major artist who indeed lasts.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the real deal., October 24, 2004
By L. Milligan (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Since other reviews have highlighted her incredible depth and range, I will only add what I know about Bonnie from a personal standpoint.

I have followed Bonnie's singing career since she dumbfounded the entire audience sitting in a gymnasium at an elementary school 'talent' show.

What was true of that eleven year old waif,is still true today:

- Under 5'1", she is riveting and has complete command of her audience.

- Her writing talent matches her musical abilities. Some of the songs on this album were written at age 13.

- Her songs are personal expressions of her own experiences and she holds absolutely nothing back. Listeners are immediately engaged by the combination of raw emotion and vulnerability in her voice.

- She has universal appeal. Her songs touch on rock, pop, jazz and blues. She is an incredible talent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Confessions of a Teenage Girl, September 29, 2004
It's been quite awhile since I've gotten really excited about a new artist. Particularly a female artist; maybe I'm just picky, but too many of the younger emerging artists these days seem to be awfully similar, and frankly I like something with a little bit of edge, a little uniqueness. With my first listen, I could tell that Bonnie McKee was something different, someone whose music would be worth getting excited about. Now that her debut album Trouble has (finally!) been released, I am definitely glad I gave her music a chance, as I was in no way disappointed.

With fiery red hair and an attitude to match, Bonnie McKee has a style all her own, and that really shows through in her music. First of all, her voice is unique, both powerful and beautiful at the same time. What really floors me about this album, however, is that every track was written by her. That makes this CD a real emotional journey. There's the beautiful ballad "Somebody" (the song that got me hooked on Bonnie's music), the almost-naughty "January" about loving a much older man, the uplifting "When It All Comes Down", the gonna-make-it anthem "A Voice That Carries", the 'I loved you but I've learned better' "Open Your Eyes", which is my personal favorite...though to be honest, there isn't a track on this CD I don't love. Being the same age as Bonnie (19), I can really relate to so many of her lyrics. She has an amazing way of saying a lot of the things I've felt myself in the past few years. I have to give her a lot of credit for being so open with her emotions in her songwriting, as it really shows in her songs. I also have to laugh, as she writes in the album's thank yous: "And finally, thanks to all the mean boys who broke my poor little heart and made these songs possible." I think it shows that, while she may have been through some pretty rough times, as we all have, she still keeps her sense of humor through it all, which is an admirable quality.

I would recommend this CD to anyone looking for a fresh sound amidst all the generic teen pop stars that seem to be all too frequent these days. Bonnie is different, amazingly talented, and her music is completely worth getting excited about. Bonnie McKee may be Trouble, but she's definitely here to stay.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprise!!! A pop singer that is actually GOOD!, July 25, 2006
By BluesGrrl (Dark Side of the Moon) - See all my reviews
At first glance, Bonnie Mckee may seem like any other pop singer. But take a closer look, and you'll see she's anything but. One of the amazing things is, this girl actually has PERSONALITY. (Something really lacking in the music biz today.) All of the lyrics on this amazing debut were written by Bonnie when she was a teen. The subject matter on the songs ranges from scandalous (January and Trouble), funny (Confessions of a Teenage Girl), to sweet (When it all comes down). Bonnie Mckee plays the piano and has a perfect voice when performing live. If you're tired of bland talentless pop stars, take my advice and CHECK THIS CD OUT!!! You won't be disappointed!!
