Book Description

1993
"A TROUBLE OF FOOLS BY LINDA BARNES, UNABRIDGED 6 AUDIO CASSETTES, NARRATED BY C.J. CRITT: It was slightly past noon on the Sunday in September when Margaret Devens came to Carlotta Carlyle's door with all the determination of an Yorkshire terrier. Carlotta just assumed that the little old lady with the steady gray eyes and the powder frosting hair who blinked at her through the peep hole was either out to save her soul or sell her a load of bull. Elderly blue-hairs like this one weren't generally in the market for private detectives. But Margaret Devens was definitely looking to hire; her younger brother, an Irish cabby, had disappeared, and she wanted someone with a bit more subtlety than the Boston police force to bring him back home. A "Missing Persons" rap wasn't Carlotta's idea of legitimate work, but there was something about the tough-skinned Miss Devens that reminded her of her own very much missed Aunt Bea. Underneath the flowered dress, the woolen shawl, and the orthopedic shoes, they wore armors of plated-steel. Carlotta's investigation takes her to the streets as a moonlighting cabby, and into the arms of an old flame, Sam Gianelli. But when Margaret is severely wounded after a break-in, it looks as if there's a lot more to this case than a wayward brother. As Carlotta gets closer to the truth, she finds herself traveling the pub route with a bunch of blarney-loving geezers whose devotion to the Emerald Isle has gotten them involved in something a lot more dangerous than politics. "Beautifully plottes, exciting, moving and leavened with wit." ---Robert B. Parker "Even in the detective-glutted Boston area, it's hard to miss Carlotta Carlyle. This is an author who's nobody's fool when it comes to writing a slick, lively story that's all in good fun." ---St. Petersburg Times [from case]

More About the Author

I was born in Detroit; I always say that's where I learned about crime, but I mean no disrespect to a great city. It's also where I learned to love Motown music and do the Stroll. Came to Boston to go to college, and like so many, stayed, awed by the Atlantic Ocean and accessible public transportation. I still love walking Boston's cobbled streets, riding the T, breathing the history.
I started writing while teaching high school theater. Required by my principal to enter a one-act play festival sponsored by the Boston Globe, I cast the play before I actually found it. I had such great students that year, and 12 of them certainly deserved to be in the festival cast. When I couldn't find a one-act with 12 roles (duh), I had to write one myself. The festival was a competition, and darned if we didn't keep on winning, right up to the state finals, where a man came up to me and asked whether he might publish that play. I said yes, wrote more plays, and then segued into crime fiction.
My first Carlotta Carlyle short story was nominated for just about every mystery award going, and the first Carlyle novel, A TROUBLE OF FOOLS, was nominated for an Edgar and a Shamus, and won the American Mystery Award. I've got a new book, the eleventh in the Carlyle series, coming out in May. It's called HEART OF THE WORLD. Check my website for upcoming tour details. For the rest, I'm married, mother of a teenage son, and currently proud to be president of Private Eye Writers of America.
