4.0 out of 5 stars Good debut CD
This CD is very good, but it got boring quite quickly. Still, its pretty fun to listen to, and some of the songs are amazing. The music is kinda poppier NIN with a female singer. Here's my track by track review:

This '93 album by British singer Harry, AKA Dirty Harry, can be hard to track down, especially new.

My journey to this album started when I saw/heard Harry duet with Dani Filth on Cradle of Filths single Temptation - a cover of an 80's pop tune by Heaven 17. Intrigued by her vocal delivery I chased this down and to tell the truth, any metal fans also...

This CD is very good, but it got boring quite quickly. Still, its pretty fun to listen to, and some of the songs are amazing. The music is kinda poppier NIN with a female singer. Here's my track by track review:
1. Goddess on the Floor: 6/10 Quite boring song. At the beginning some clanging industrial noises, and building up slowly to become almost a techno dance track. Seeing as I'm into rock this didn't really appeal to me.
2. Twelve Things: Pretty chilled song but got boring after a few listens. 7/10
3. Follow Me: Starts off all sweet and girly and then the guitars kick in!! 8/10
4. So Real: One of the poppiest songs on the album. Its slightly different to the single version of this song. 8/10
5. Valley: My favourite song, apart from Tastes Like Kisses. Harry's voice is gorgeous on this; it starts off quiet and spine-tinglingly beautful, but then gets louder with a simple but effective guitar solo.10/10
6. Underground: This song is quite annoying. The poppiest on the album, apart from So Real and Push It. Starts well, but the chorus lets it down. 4/10
7. Eye: This is one of the best songs, one of the hardest songs on the album anyway. Its a good song to listen to when you're angry at someone. All together now: "You eat up my dirt!!!!" 9/10
8. Push It (Real Good): A very good cover. This one is really danceable, with cool synths. Probably the least rocky song on the album, this song relies mostly on synths, but does have a few grinding guitars in there. 9/10
9. I Do What I Do: Pretty hard song, at least compared to the others. This one is quite forgettable, but ok. 7/10
10. Tastes Like Kisses: I LOVE this song!!!! Along with Valley, it's my favourite. Girly and pop-rocky, its not really my style, but I love the girly vocals mixed with guitars and synths. 10/10
11. Heroin: Its quite good, but another forgettable one. Sounds a bit like the previous track only not so good. 5/10
12. Nothing Really Matters: This song is quite long and does drag on a bit. Still, its pretty good. The end is the best bit, where Harry screams the lyrics over and over and the song explodes in this massive electrical burst. 8/10
13. Imagination: Another cover, but its great. This was on the rimmel advert and you can see why - its stylish and just sleazy enough. 10/10
Basically, this album is great if you're into industrial or electroclash music. There is good variety among the songs, and though some of the songs are weak its a pretty cool album.

Now this is a very pleasant surprise! It is mix of techno and metal by a group with a female singer. At times it is stunning modern music as on "Goddess on the Floor" or "imagination". Some of the other songs are somewhat weaker but overali it is a superb CD.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wants to be pop rock, but too electro, March 13, 2007

This '93 album by British singer Harry, AKA Dirty Harry, can be hard to track down, especially new.

My journey to this album started when I saw/heard Harry duet with Dani Filth on Cradle of Filths single Temptation - a cover of an 80's pop tune by Heaven 17. Intrigued by her vocal delivery I chased this down and to tell the truth, any metal fans also considering buying this album would do well to be aware of a few things.

One is that just because the lass has worked with Cradle of Filth doesn't really give her an real metal cred - at least on the basis of this record. Much of this is industrial pop, if such a term exists. Perhaps it would of sounded cutting edge in a dance club circa '93 though perhaps it wouldn't of had enough moronic doof doof sounding electro beats. Mind you what doof doof is here is a little bit more like an undercurrent, a truly maddening one on tracks like So Real and Follow Me. When it backs off a bit it allows the tracks to breath a little such as the quite good chorus of Valley, one of the stand out tracks here and one of the mellower.

Harry has a pleasant, vocally simple form of delivery, almost a conversational singing style. This sort of thing can be quite engaging but only if the protagonist is themselves interesting. Given this was apparently her first LP perhaps explains why Harry hasn't really stamped a great deal of personality on many of the tracks.

But what this album has got going for it is the varying styles on display. From the electro pop of the opener Goddess on the Floor to the more soft rock stylings of Underground and the frankly weird choice of Push It (Real Good) as a cover - yep the Salt 'n' Pepa song! On top of that there are various producers on these tracks that mixes things up a bit, sometimes making it harder to compare track to track and maybe explaining the different feel to so many of the tunes. But it also - if like me you read this stuff in the booklet while first listening to an album, makes the disc appear like some sort of project.

A very kind person might call this eclectic, a nasty person would call it confused. In this case I'm neither, being undecided on the strength of this debut disc. As for the general music fan, there may well be something here that floats your boat as there is nothing too heavy, not even the driving I Do What I Do and the varying styles of the songs here at least breaks things up to make the album a diverting listen.
