5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Slice of "Literary" Tiramisu!
What a great, enjoyable read! Tiramisu is that wonderful Italian dessert of espresso, rich cream cheese and elegant flavors that means "pick me up" in Italian. What a great, enjoyable read! Tiramisu is that wonderful Italian dessert of espresso, rich cream cheese and elegant flavors that means "pick me up" in Italian. That image fits this charming book to a tee. Well done characters, especially the female lead, who (for a change!) when placed in a dangerous situation has the common sense to listen to a man who knows how to handle the situation. So often, weaker authors will have the female lead do something completely stupid just to prove her independance. Additional secondary characters are thought out and ADD to the plot, enriching the story and making the emotional connections reasonable and sweet. The sensuality between the lead couple is dynamite and I love any story that can use $8000 to justify not only a superior Spa Day but to underwrite an entire life change. Remember, this tasty little gem of a book is not meant for anything more than the best escape--putting too many expectations on the story could cause the lightness and fun to deflate like over-beaten whipped cream.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for those who like romantic suspense, December 16, 2006
Brandi Michaels learns that her fiance has dumped her and eloped to Vegas with his girlfriend on the same day as she uproots her life and moves from Nashville to Chicago to be closer to him. When he asks for her engagement ring back to give to his new bride, it's the last straw. Brandi takes the ring to a pawn shop, and uses the money from its sale to buy a new dress, a sexy pair of F-me heels and a day at the spa. With her beauty regimen completed, she plans to meet a man and have one night of passion to erase the memory of her errant fiance and kick off the beginning of her new life.

Roberto Bartolini just happens to be at the same party as Brandi and can't helped but be captivated by the leggy blonde bombshell in the clingy dress. When she decides to seduce HIM, he can't help but agree. They spend a passionate weekend in his suite and when they part ways, Brandi believes they'll never see each other again. Little does she know that when she begins her new job at a law firm the next day, Roberto will be there--as her client.

This novel was entertaining from start to finish with enough mystery and romance to keep me intrigued. Roberto Bartolini was the best hero with his passionate nature, tendency to cater to women, and insistence on putting Brandi first. I couldn't wait to see him break down all of Brandi's defenses and convince her that he was the man for her. Brandi was funny and I loved that she made Roberto work for everything that he got. Their romance created sparks from beginning to end and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romantic suspense. This was my first Christina Dodd novel, but I will definitely be looking forward to the next one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun, sassy read..., September 26, 2006
After reading this book I was surprised at some of the negative comments by other reviewers. I thought this book was really entertaining and it kept my attention throughout. The main characters had great interactions (both verbally and physically!). Although at times the plot may have been a bit of a stretch (lawyer having to babysit her client because the judge did not like the client's comments about the American's legal system, etc.), the book as a whole was so fun I could overlook it. In genernal, I thought this book was one of Ms. Dodd's best modern day romances to date - as good as some of her historical ones. If you are looking for a fun, sassy, exciting, fast read, do yourself a favor and pick this one up.

2.0 out of 5 stars All of the ingredients of a good book are here, but the good book is not., September 1, 2006
There's the heroine, Brandi, who has issues with her parents - her parents divorced and she overheard a few too many cruel comments before her dad finally walked out. She's so terrified of being in the same situation as her mother, needy and feminine, that she essentially repudiates her Mother and everything she has taught her to be (feminine, sweet, dependent) in order to become a self-sufficient lawyer who needs nobody.

Over the course of the novel she learns a lot of hard lessons - that the fiance she picked to be the exact opposite of her father is really a lot like him; that she has become like her father by rejecting and infantalizing her mother. She has to face them, and make new choices, finding a man who will treat her right, re-forging her relationhip with her mother. And she has to kick her father out of her life entirely.

The hero, Roberto, is not as richly drawn. He's actually very hard to understand, and although his POV is scattered through the novel the reader never gets to see deep enough into his thoughts to understand his motivations and behavior. His feelings about Brandi seesaw without any apparent logic; one day he wants no commitment and is all love-em-and-leave-em, and the very next day he's introducing her to the family and mentioning marriage. His purpose in Chicago is a little unclear; he wants revenge of some kind, and redemption, but we're left to wonder what exactly that means to him - although this turns out to be easy enough to guess, and eventually I wondered how Brandi had failed to spot the obvious.

But really, so far, so good. It's in the execution that things really go awry.

"Trouble in High Heels" does two things that make me instantly hate any romance novel:

(1) The heroine is always angry or snappish or bickering, and the hero finds this adorable. There's a point after some minor trauma where the hero says something like, "Ah, there you are, snapping at me again - you must be back to yourself! How delightful!" I don't like heroines who have nothing nice to say, and I don't like the heroes who find them delightful.

(2) The book concludes with a lengthy grovel on the part of the hero. I can't stand it when the high-point of the novel, the real proof of the hero's worthiness, is that he's willing to abase himself for the heroine no matter how persistently she rejects him. On top of which, in this case I didn't think he'd done anything wrong and I had no idea where Brandi got off being angry.

But there's so much more. Here's a typical example. There's a subplot about how Brandi turns her back on ballet because her father thinks its worthless, and she says she hasn't danced since she was thirteen; except other times, she brings it up and is very proud of being a ballerina and is apparently still practicing. The ideas are there but the development is poor and inconsistent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute and Sweet, August 1, 2006
I don't know how this happened, but I actually got this book a couple of days ago. In it, Brandi Michaels is a super-gorgeous, tall, former ballerina-turned-lawyer who moves to Chicago to start a new job and be with her fiancee. Too bad, because when he calls it turns out he's in Vegas, drunk, married to his pregnant girlfriend, and blaming Brandi. She decides to get revenge by pawning the ring (which he wanted back!!) to get a makeover, kicka** dress, and finding a killer man to sleep with. She meets the perfect guy, Count Roberto Bartolini, at a party - he's tall enough not to be imtimidated by her height and apparently oozes sex appeal through his pores. She enthralls him, vice versa, and they have a very nice time. Too bad on Monday when she reports to work it turns out he's a criminal client, and she gets stuck as his babysitter. From there, they face threats, theiving, Brandi's mother, Roberto's grandfather (who I really loved), and Brandi's ex-fiancee and new wife. Not to mention trying to fight their hormones

Basically, this is a fun book. Sometimes it's a little overdone (Brandi's dad is apparently just shy of stupidly evil) and the insecurites presented are a little unbelievable (especially with Brandi). But, if you're going to get caught up in a story, it's great to have the incredibly beautiful woman getting revenge and satisfaction by intriguing an amazingly sexy man. Of course, it isn't quite a straight path for the couple (is he a thief? will she get fired? who wants to hurt her? what is her mom doing in Chicago?), but it's a happy and cute story. The sex scenes are pretty good(let's just say they are location-inventive a couple of times). If you really love jewelry and designer clothes, this book will be even more appealing. You do have to suspend reality on the law school and hiring bit, but no one's perfect :)

Overall I'd recommend this as a light read when you're in the mood for the "perfect couple." Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wickedly Sexy and fun read, November 18, 2006

Trouble In High Heels by Christina Dodd is a sultry and delightful story.

Brandi Michaels has moved to Chicago to be near her fiancé. She is barely moved in when she finds out his is marrying another woman that he got pregnant. Brandi decides she is going to have one night in the arms of a stranger. Brandi thinks she has met that man at her honorary uncle Charles McGrath's home.

The lady in red at his lawyer's private party intrigues Roberto Bartolini. When she offers him a night of passion with no strings attached, he does not pass it up. But they both are in for a shock when she has joined the law firm that is set to defend him against charges of being a jewel thief.

Can Brandi trust this man with her heart as well as her life? When her life is threatened Roberto offers his wealth and home as a haven. These two have major trust issues to overcome. Will they be able to do that before danger catches up with them?

Trouble In High Heels is an exceptional book. The chemistry between Roberto and Brandi ignites in every scene.

Another excellent book by Christina Dodd. The reader is captured right from the start & will have difficulty putting it down until it's finished. It's a good escape from life's daily trials & tribulations. Unlike reality, everything comes out happily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and spirited romance/suspense, August 28, 2006

I absolutely loved this book and could not put it down. It's romance suspense at its best. A handsome Italian alpha paired with "cheeky" blond attorney. Plus the passion, well let's say they're combustible together!

It was like watching the Grace Kelly and Cary Grant movie, To Catch a Thief......jewelry heist, passion, intrigue and such intensity between two dynamic characters plus the Italian Mob.

It's just another wonderful story penned by New York Times bestselling author Christina Dodd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty, fast-paced, great hero, smart heroine, August 10, 2006
This book is simply the best contemporary Christina Dodd has written. I still like her hsitoricals better, but Brandi is a woman who gets angry at her ex-fiance and does something about it. I was really cheering for her. Then she realized how much in trouble she was, and the action takes off. Roberto was rich, privileged, and not what he seems at first, and I was able to put myself in Brandi's place as she stumbled on one piece of evidence after another. TROUBLE IN HIGH HEELS - two thumbs up.

(VINE VOICE)
Trouble in High Heels by Christina Dodd is another amazing novel by this author. Brandi moves to Chicago to be near her fiance and start her career as a lawyer. She doesn't have the boxes unpacked before her fiance calls to tell her he is in Vegas and married. Brandi decides a hot night with a strange will help her get past the break-up. Everything goes wrong - this novel has jewel thievies, great love scences, mystery and murder. Check out her next novel Tongue in Chic coming February 2007.
