Editorial Reviews

'Trouble in Mind', is a brilliant collaboration with Elkie's original mentor, big-band performer and internationally celebrated Jazz legend Humphrey Lyttelton. This album demonstrates their mutual desire to pay tribute and respect to particular artists and songs that they have been inspired by over the years.

Format: Audio CD
Well she started out with Robert Palmer in Vinegar Joe, but somewhere along the tracks, she found the middle of the road and settled there for a while.
But nothing Elkie Brooks ever did was middle of the road, because she could belt out a tune like no other. A more refined Janis maybe in some minds. Some songs and albums might not have tipped the top of the scales, but you would definitely find a "Pearl" among the chaff. She has a hits album called "Pearls" so pardon me that weak attempt at a pun.
Seriously though, Mr Lyttleton was a very respected Jazz man in his day and I wish maybe that this collaboration, was a long time ago, because she has been ready for a class turn like this for many a year.
She had quite a few hits over the years in Europe and some left an indelible mark and if you are of a mind to try out a new singer, let me tell you, she's the bomb. Raspy sometimes and uses her voice like an instrument, but always a Natural born singer of the highest calibre. I hate really to mention any tune of hers, because there are some, that would rip out your heart strings, some I could do without and some that just make it.
I know many people over the years have liked some I didn't and fair play to them because I am sure their money buying her music, kept the show on the road. But this is a quality pairing and Humphrey must have smiled through the whole time they were recording, knowing, this was the real thing.
Give her the benefit of the doubt if this jazz thing is what you are all about, but search out her "pop" and "rock" efforts too. Still one of the greats. Elkie Brooks.

I have been a long time fan of Elkie Brooks .Saw her in concert at the Grand Theater in Swansea Wales many years ago.
her singing is wonderful, I have collected most of her works and play them often. this CD is different -good. This has a jazz /blues feel to it,. It is easy to listen too mellow and uplifting too. She is superb. I play this very often as it is different from her usual work and i hope she makes more CD's like this one.
