There are countless technical books on alcoholism, addition and recovery crowding the bookshelves. This book is different. It portrays the personal agony that one man encountered in stark detail. You feel drawn into his sobering journey and feel what he had to face and walk through. If you know of someone who struggles with these similar issues, this is the book to put into their hands. It is not a textbook. It is a story. And the good news is...there IS hope! Well done!

I really enjoyed this book. The story is told with so much color and detail that you feel like you're right there beside the author seeing and experiencing the things he has with a feeling of being a first-hand witness. It is a touching, moving, and enlightening book.

Jim's book is an eye-opener for the seasoned professional, for clients, for the entire field of recovery. His journey is one of bravery and courage. His writing style, because of his authenticity, pulls the reader beyond a superficial reading on recovery. There is soul-truth in his writings that touches the reader at a very deep place.

Jim's book reaches the reader on different levels. His personal journey into recovery is heart wrenching; the reader travels his journey with him. His dedication and commitment to developing a program for recovery is inspiring. His battle with the field in general to accept what was revolutionary at the time--that an addiction is an addiction--whether it be alcohol, crack, or heroin, truly caused a paradigm shift in the recovery field.

What struck me most was his fight to include the family in treatment. Throughout the book, he brings out the effect of his alcohol addiction on his family. His tenacious and determined battles with the unions; his descriptions of the struggles, fears and pain that all family members experience as a result of the addiction-- all of these battles to help people and give them a chance to move forward into a life without addiction is so impressive. It is because of his pioneering work that now we believe that Addiction is a Family Matter.
