5.0 out of 5 stars Jamie Saft Trio - Trouble: The Jamie Saft Trio Plays Bob Dylan, December 28, 2006
This review is from: Trouble: Jamie Saft Trio Plays Bob Dylan (Audio CD)
Jamie Saft Trio's "Trouble" is a delightful tribute to Bob Dylan. These radical reworkings are reinterpretations from the intimate side of an iconic lyricist. "Dignity", "Dirge", and "Disease Of Conceit" are incredible compositions that resonate with the musical and spiritual intricacies of Bob Dylan's dynamic music. Jamie Saft performs on piano and hammond organ, joined by Greg Cohen on contrabass, and Ben Perowsky on drums. Special guest vocalists include Mike Patton on "Ballad Of A Thin Man", and Antony on "Living The Blues". An essential addition to Tzadik's Radical Jewish Culture series.

This is an impressive jazz CD that I think anyone who enjoys jazz piano trios should explore. Not being a Dylan fan, and never having purchased a Tzadik CD, I did not know what to expect. I am familiar with 'Ballad of a Thin Man,' but not with the other Dylan tunes. The music is fresh, stretching but not breaking the jazz envelope. The players are technically adept and creative. The drum tones hint of 'Bad Plus,' but I thought this approach was more polished. This recording is clearly a labor of love from very fine musicians. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dylan Jazz, August 22, 2006
This review is from: Trouble: Jamie Saft Trio Plays Bob Dylan (Audio CD)
This 8-track jazz CD includes 6 instrumentals and 2 guest vocals: Ballad of A Thin Man by Mike Patton (lead singer of Faith No More and other bands) and Living The Blues by Antony (of Antony and the Johnsons.)
Most of he 6 instros are led by piano or Hammond organ. My favorites are the 2 organ tracks: Dignity is reminiscent of Brother Jack McDuff or Booker T., while Disease of Conceit is in a different, hymn-like style, a fitting album closer.
Highly recommended.
